At Least 40 Dead and Many Dozens Injured After Attackers Open Fire in Moscow Area Concert Venue

At least 40 people were killed and more than 100 were injured after armed attackers stormed a popular concert venue complex near Moscow and opened fire, according to preliminary information from the Federal Security Service in Russia, state media TASS reported.

Video footage from the site of the attack, the Crocus City Hall concert venue, shows the vast complex on fire with smoke billowing into the air. RIA Novosti reported the armed individuals “opened fire with automatic weapons” and “threw a grenade or an incendiary bomb, which started a fire.”

State media Russia 24 reported the roof on the venue has partially collapsed.

The attack unfolded before the music group Picnic was set to preform, according to Russia 24.

The Russia Prosecutor General’s Office said “Unidentified people in camouflage broke into Crocus City Hall and started shooting before the start of the concert,” according to Russian state media TASS.

Video footage showed panic as the attack unfolded, with crowds of people huddling together, screaming and ducking behind cushioned seats as gunshots started echoing in the vast hall.

Regional governor Andrey Vorobyov said everything was being done to save people. A SWAT team was called to the area and more than 70 ambulance teams and doctors were assisting victims.

Around 100 people were evacuated from the building by firefighters as rescuers are still working to get people off the roof, according to the Main Directorate of the Ministry of Emergency Situations.

At least 40 people were massacred and more than 100 others were wounded after several gunmen opened fire during a concert in Moscow on Friday, according to Russian officials.

ISIS claimed responsibility for the attack in a brief statement posted on Telegram on its affiliated news agency Amaq, CNN reported. The terrorist group did not provide any evidence to substantiate their claim.

Disturbing video posted online showed at least five gunmen in military uniforms shooting screaming civilians with automatic weapons as others ducked for cover at the Crocus City Hall, where Russian rock band Picnic was about to take the stage for a sold-out show.

Other footage shows the men firing at concertgoers at point-blank range below the venue’s entrance sign as bloodied bodies lay motionless on the ground.

Russian media reports said that the assailants threw explosives, triggering the massive blaze at the hall, which can hold more than 6,000 people. Video showed flames and black smoke light up the night sky as scores of ambulances, fire trucks and law enforcement flocked to the chaotic scene.

Russian President Vladmir Putin denounced bloodshed at Crocus City Hall in Krasnogorsk as “barbaric” in a five-minute televised address, while claiming that four of the suspects were taken into custody as they tried to escape following the savage onslaught had assistance from Ukraine.

“They were trying to hide and were moving toward Ukraine,” Putin said Saturday. “Based on preliminary information, a window for crossing the border was prepared for them by the Ukrainian side.”

Whoever hired them, for whatever millions of rubles it was, did not expect them to return and did not care whether they lived or died. Trying to physically escape Russia, reportedly following exactly the same route as when you entered it, was not the M.O. of a professional, and not even the M.O. of someone who had received "good" advice.

The illegal immigrants in Russia come from a number of countries, and the population, much like Americas, has gotten themselves whipped up about it.
