Police in Texas issue arrest warrant for woman in connection with killing of Vermont cyclist

Anna Moriah Wilson, a top professional cyclist from Vermont, was killed in connection with a romantic dispute, police in Austin, Texas, said in an application for an arrest warrant.

The warrant charges Kaitlin Marie Armstrong, 34, of Austin, with murder in the slaying of Wilson, 25, who was shot multiple times with a 9mm handgun on May 11, according to legal filings.

Wilson, a Dartmouth graduate, had dated Armstrong’s boyfriend, Colin Strickland, 35, another professional cyclist, last fall when the Austin-based couple had briefly separated, according to the filings. The records include an account from an anonymous caller who said that when Armstrong discovered the relationship between Strickland and Wilson, she “was so angry [that] Armstrong wanted to kill Wilson.”

Wilson was in Texas for an upcoming race and was staying at a friend’s apartment in Austin. Authorities say that on the day she was killed, she went swimming with Strickland and then had dinner with him at an Austin burger restaurant.

AUSTIN, Texas - The U.S. Marshals Lone Star Fugitive Task Force says it has located the black Jeep Grand Cherokee that was registered to homicide suspect Kaitlin Armstrong.

Officials say that task force investigators learned that Armstrong sold the vehicle on May 13 to a CarMax dealership in South Austin for $12,200. Armstrong received a check from the dealership the day after being questioned by authorities in Austin.

Armstrong left the Austin airport on May 14 and was last known to have been dropped off at the Newark Liberty International Airport on May 18, a day after Austin police issued a homicide warrant for her arrest.

A source told investigators that Armstrong was provided transportation and investigators searched outbound flights at the Newark Liberty. No flight reservations have been found under Kaitlin Armstrong.

The U.S. Marshals have elevated the case to a "Major" case and is offering up to a $5,000 reward in addition to a $1,000 cash reward by the Capital Area Crime Stoppers for information leading to the arrest of Armstrong. An anonymous donor is contributing up to $15,000 bringing the total combined reward of up to $21,000.

Armstrong is white, stands 5 feet 8 inches, and weighs approximately 125 pounds. She has light brown long, curly hair and hazel eyes and was last seen on surveillance video wearing a blue denim jacket, black shirt with a pink design on the chest, white jeans, black and white tennis shoes, a black COVID mask, and a possible yoga mat carrier on her shoulders.

Anyone with information on Armstrong’s whereabouts is urged to contact the U.S. Marshals Service Communications Center at 1-800-336-0102 or submit a tip using the USMS Tips app. Tips may also be sent to the Capital Area Crime Stoppers at 1-800-893-8477.

Armstrong faces a first-degree murder charge and in her arraignment Wednesday, Armstrong pled not guilty.

In addition to that, U.S. Marshals had obtained a warrant for her arrest on a charge of unlawful flight to avoid prosecution after she fled Texas in May, traveling to New York, New Jersey and then Costa Rica, where police arrested her at a hostel on Santa Teresa Beach in Provinica de Puntarenas on June 29.

A federal judge recently dismissed that charge against Armstrong but it's just a formality, and she could face the charge again in the future if prosecutors deem it necessary.

Her attorneys addressed the press outside the courtroom following the arraignment. Watch their statement below:

Armstrong's attorneys have also filed a motion for a speedy trial. The docket call is set for October 19 and a jury trial is expected to take place the following week.

An attorney representing the state says that Travis County has over 100 murder cases backlogged due to the COVID-19 pandemic. "I don't know what kind of privilege this particular defendant has to cut in front all of these people who have been waiting for trial," he said.

The attorney requested Armstrong waive ineffective assistance of counsel claims if they are proceeding with the October trial, saying "I know [Armstrong's legal team] haven't seen all the evidence because we don't have all the evidence to give to them."

A jury has found Kaitlin Armstrong guilty of first-degree murder in the fatal shooting of 25-year-old professional cyclist Anna Moriah “Mo” Wilson in Texas in May 2022.

In Texas, the conviction carries a possible sentence up to 99 years in prison.

Armstrong’s case drew national attention after she traveled to Costa Rica and went missing for more than 40 days following the murder. Armstrong’s then-boyfriend, Colin Strickland, is another cyclist and the last person seen with Wilson before her death.

Strickland testified during the trial that he had a brief romantic relationship with Wilson in the fall of 2021 while his relationship with Armstrong was on a break. The state sought to paint Armstrong as a jealous girlfriend who had access to Strickland’s text communications and used a geolocation app to track Wilson.

The defense has maintained that police neglected to test all evidence and consider other suspects.
