A teacher has been stabbed to death in front of pupils inside a school in Leeds.

Spanish teacher Anne Maguire, 61, was taken to hospital following the attack but later pronounced dead.

A 15-year-old boy was detained by teaching staff at Corpus Christi Catholic College and later arrested.

A pupil at the scene told the BBC that children were seen screaming and running from a classroom following the attack.

Ch Supt Paul Money of West Yorkshire Police said the victim received a number of stab wounds and a knife was recovered from the scene.

He said the 15-year-old pupil was detained by other teaching staff and arrested in connection with the stabbing.

"The incident itself was over very quickly and no other pupils or staff were threatened or injured. However this has clearly been a very traumatic situation for those involved," Mr Money said.

He said the attack was an "unprecedented event" and schools in Leeds were "generally very safe places" to work and study.

Yeah, it just takes that one time to bite you in the butt. Condolences to the teachers family.

Wow I really want to know what this kid had against this teacher. Did she give him a bad grade or what? No matter what the kid is a freakin asshole.

A 15-year-old boy was being questioned by police today after allegedly stabbing his ‘caring and kind’ teacher Anne Maguire to death in front of her pupils.

The boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was held after Mrs Maguire was repeatedly stabbed in the neck in front of a class of teenagers at the Corpus Christie Catholic College school in Leeds.
[...]

Some pupils at the school today said the boy who allegedly stabbed the teacher was ‘strange’ and ‘depressed’

Pupil Jacob Hill, 16, from Leeds, said: 'He had gone through stages of depression and used to be on anti-depressants.'

16-year-old Matthew Calvert, also of Leeds, was in many of the same lessons as the alleged attacker and described him as 'strange'.

Officers were called just before midday by the ambulance service who were attending a report of a member of staff having been stabbed.

The incident was reported by students at the scene who also witnessed the offence. Pupils remained at the school this afternoon as police said it 'continued to operate as normal'.
[...]

Pupils took to Twitter to describe Mrs Maguire as 'great', an 'inspirational woman' and 'lovely'. One said: 'You were such a caring, funny and hardworking teacher. You'll certainly be missed.'
[...]

Pupil Georgina Kilroy, 16, said the woman had been a teacher for 40 years. Speaking outside the school, she said: ‘I don't know anyone who didn't like her. She was spot on. You couldn't ask for a better teacher.’

A devoted teacher was stabbed to death in front of her horrified class yesterday by a pupil said to have a grudge against her.

Children screamed as the 15-year-old boy calmly walked up behind Ann Maguire in the middle of a lesson and repeatedly stabbed her in the neck with a kitchen knife.
[...]

As Mrs Maguire was being attacked, a fellow teacher raced in and grabbed the boy. Other staff helped to detain him until police arrived.
The middle class pupil, who was described as an ‘outcast’, has a picture of the Grim Reaper on his Facebook page.

Mrs Maguire, 61, was taken to hospital by paramedics after the attack, at around 11.45am. But she was declared dead on arrival.
[...]

Fellow pupils said she had given the boy a detention last week and he told other pupils she was ‘always getting at him’.
[...]

The alleged killer comes from a respectable middle-class family. His mother works as a human resources manager for a local firm and his father is a council executive.

A 16-year-old classmate described the teenager as having few friends, saying he had been bullied previously and taken anti-depressants.

The boy was an ‘A grade pupil’ but he disliked Spanish and could not stand the teacher.
[...]

Pupil Jacob Hill, 16, who had known the alleged attack since primary school, said: ‘He had gone through stages of depression and used to be on anti-depressants. He is really clever and always got top grades.’

The boy was said to have previously been suicidal. Other pupils described him as ‘really weird’.

Police have today said they are trawling social media pages linked to the schoolboy who allegedly hacked his teacher to death in front of his class.

The 15-year-old has been described as a depressed loner who spent long periods online playing ultra-violent video games and listening to death metal.

A drawing of a Grim Reaper is the banner on his Facebook page, which also revealed his keen interest in Dark Souls - where a cursed character travels through a fantasy world killing others.

Classmates said he was a 'loner' who appears to have few friends, apart from other gamers he met on the internet.

West Yorkshire Police said today they were 'aware' of his online presence, which is 'forming part of their investigation'.

'K, this quote from the above link made me laugh:

He added: ‘He came to a party a few weeks ago and he took some paracetamol beforehand. He used to take drugs all the time.’

He must be pretty cool. According to the quote above, he plays Dark Souls, listens to heavy metal, has a grim reaper on fb, and he's a loner! That's a damn good description of me lol. Except for the depression and drugs.

@cubby I am sorry my sarcasim about the teacher giving the kid a failing grade offended you. That wasn't my intention to offend. My sarcasim got the best of me.

@KKmom, it's all good, but I think you may have confused me with someone else, I hadn't even posted on this thread. LOL <3

They keep repeating this thing about her being about to retire. As if that makes it even a tiny little bit sadder. I think the fact that she was clearly highly thought of by just about anybody they ask is far more important.

As if her death is less of a loss because she was going to not be there in a few weeks anyway! So now they've got to scramble and find a new teacher weeks earlier than they had planned.

Also when they mention how big and expensive a house the victim or the perpertrator lived in, how in the world does that matter at all that they lived in a mansion in the most expensive part of town, or lived in section 8 housing down where the poor folks live, how does that even matter, just give an address, we can figure the rest out for ourselves.

I think the fact that she was clearly highly thought of by just about anybody they ask is far more important.

Totally agree with you - If she could have seen the huge outpouring of love and fond memories, and known what a positive impact she'd had on so many lives - I think that would have made her very happy indeed. But I do think the fact she was going to retire adds to the overall sadness. If the little jerk who killed her had just kept his shit together for just 3 more months until school let out - she could have had a happy retirement. So incredibly sad that what sounds like an absolutely awesome and inspirational teacher has been robbed of what should have been her well-earned break, and her chance to do whatever took her fancy with her time. Her husband and family have been robbed of that time too.

British teen Will Cornick gets life in prison for murder of Spanish teacher Ann Maguire
Cornick, 16, stabbed the 61-year-old Maguire to death inside a Corpus Christi Catholic College classroom in Leeds in April, then sat down as if nothing had happened and said 'good times' as his classmates screamed in horror. The deranged teen showed no remorse for the murder, even bringing a bottle of whiskey to school so he could celebrate the slaying. He fantasized for months about murdering the beloved educator.

Every time I read about this type of attack, this song pops into my head!
*Not a MCR fan, my own teenage son went through an Emo phase, that's how I heard it. Thankfully, he outgrew it, and is now a freshman at ECU!

A plaque dedicated to a murdered school teacher has been unveiled in her hometown in Greater Manchester.

The plaque is displayed at the pavilion at Wigan's Mesnes Park where Mrs Maguire sold ice creams as a teenager.

A rose was also planted in the park's memorial garden.

The plaque was unveiled on Friday by Mrs Maguire's sisters, Shelagh Connor and Denise Courtney.
