The victim was perusing the produce aisle mid-morning on Saturday in a ShopRite grocery store in New Windsor, N.Y., about 60 miles north of New York City.

Behind him, a quiet assailant calmly approached.

He brandished a folding box cutter knife in his hand, reported the Times Herald-Record, and without warning or struggle, he slit the victim’s throat.

Then as quietly as he came, the assailant disappeared, camouflaged amid the crowds of weekend shoppers. He remained there for 45 minutes, according to police, while medics rushed the unconscious, bleeding victim to a nearby hospital where he died and while authorities searched for his attacker.

After reviewing surveillance footage and identifying the man with the knife, the New Windsor Police Department and store officials at ShopRite found the assailant in the crowd.

Police identified him as Andrew Goodenough, a 35-year-old resident of Highland Falls, another small town nestled along the the Hudson River, and charged him with second-degree murder.

Interesting. Only second-degree, huh? You'd think a first-degree murder charge would be a slam dunk in this case.

Wonder how mentally ill the assassin is.

I was wondering that too, since he bought a box cutter with him, calmly targeting the guy then tried to hide in the crowd to watch. Seems planned and with intent to me.

Good god :wtf: as a person who's diet consists mostly of fruits and veggies ...
Can't even buy apples now and feel safe :finger: bullshit !!
... why couldn't this shit happen in the potato chip isle  some place I'll never be.

He probably figured all the assholes in the potato chip aisle were doing the job on their own, albeit a bit more slowly. :D

Wow, what an intelligent, thoughtful looking fellow.
I wonder how many times his dick has gotten stuck in the bathtub faucet.

At least he was truly derpy enough to stay at the scene to get arrested.
Lock him in a cell with an audio loop playing saying "kill yourself" over and over until it sinks in.

Perfect. :D

I agree this was planned. He came prepared. Quietly and maliciously snuck up on his victim. The fact that he hung around to watch all that unfolded after his deed is disgusting. This guy just wanted his 15 minutes of fame. We are going to see them all coming out of the woodwork to make a name for themselves after the Orlando tragedy.

NEW WINDSOR, NY – Police have arrested 35-year-old Andrew Goodenough after he used a box-cutter to slit a stranger’s throat in a New York grocery store.

The incident happened inside a Shoprite on Saturday morning when Goodenough walked behind a man he did not know and slit the man’s throat in the produce aisle.

Goodenough dropped the knife then calmly walked to another part of the store, leaving 35-year-old Michael Kohus to bleed to death on the floor. There were around 250 people in the store at the time, so Kohus was discovered within minutes after being attacked.

Unfortunately, there wasn’t anything anyone could do and Kohus was pronounced dead after being taken to the hospital. Police quickly sealed off the store as they searched for a suspect and screened customers before letting them leave.

Using the store’s surveillance cameras, police were able to identify Goodenough as their suspect and take him into custody as he tried blending in with other shoppers. Goodenough is now being held without bail at Orange County Jail, facing a second-degree murder charge.

Officials said there was no altercation, no arguing, and no apparent connection between the two men. They added that police had previous run-ins with Goodenough where he was asked to leave areas because he was acting suspicious, but he has no previous arrests.

One of Goodenough’s neighbors described him as a “troubled man” with an unstable temper. “I stopped hanging out with him because he does flip, he does like a 180,” the neighbor said.

A vigil was held for Kohus on Sunday night in Highland Falls. “He didn’t deserve this,” said his sister, Christina Kohus Stradley. “He never did a bad thing in his life,” added his mother, Marylou Kohus.

We reported on an almost identical story out of Maryland last year, in which 31-year-old Connor MacCalister walked into a Shaw’s supermarket and slit the throat of 59-year-old Wendy Boudreau.

Boudreau would die from her injuries and MaCalister would be charged with her murder. MacCalister would later tell police that she was off her meds and had been planning to kill someone for months because she was “angry with life.” She targeted the mother of five because she had “looked at her funny” in the parking lot.

In November of last year, MacCalister would be sentenced to life in prison.

Jesus... Trying to decide between normal tomatoes and vine ripened ones in one minute, dying a damn brutal death with a crowd of helpless strangers standing over you, the next.

That poor, poor man. My sincerest condolences to his family for their utterly shocking and nonsensical loss.

As for this lunatic, I don't really want to hear that he suffered a breakdown, or had a psychiatric illness. Or needs mental health treatment.

He walked up to a random stranger, carrying a box cutter (that he slipped into his pocket before leaving home?) to which he brutally slaughtered him, then attempted to avoid getting caught, by blending in with the other customers.

You're not that crazy when you have enough sense to pack a weapon and then to try and hide from the Cops.

I hope this state has the death penalty. Why bother wasting time, money and resources attempting to rehabilitate a total monster who has zero value for human life? The best contribution he could give the world at this point, is digging his own grave, climbing in and waiting for the bullet.

I believe I read somewhere that in New York first degree murder is reserved for the murder of police officers and a few other specific types of victim?

This is true. The applicable code is available here, under PEN -> Article 125 -> 125.27. It's too long to copy and paste in its entirety, but what it amounts to is a first-time murderer can't be charged with murder in the first degree unless he or she kills a first responder, a prison guard, while in custody, under the "felony murder" rule, for compensation, or in an act of terrorism.
