Josh Griffin faces a felony count of endangering children and a misdemeanor count of domestic violence.
Police also filed a motion for a temporary protection order to keep him away from the victim, Young and the residence.
In court, Griffin’s attorney said he has an intellectual disability and has trouble reading and writing.
Karen Young told Loveland police Griffin has been living with her and her son at their apartment on Main Street in Loveland for about three months, according to his criminal complaint.
“Mr. Griffin forcefully beat the 8-year-old victim about 20 times with a belt,” investigators wrote in the court filing.
Young is charged with misdemeanor counts of endangering children and failing to report a crime.
She “observed Josh Griffin forcefully and repeatedly striking her 8-year-old developmentally challenged son approximately 20 times with a belt,” her criminal complaint reads.
Police say they charged her based on video surveillance and her “confession” that she allowed Griffin to ”aggressively strike” her child.
