So a US Marine sits in Russian prison, but the spoiled, bitter, nasty, unpatriotic Griner gets to come home? Because we traded the "Merchant of Death" for her marijuana habit? I'm thoroughly disgusted in the current Administration. Service members before professional sports stars, always! :shifty:
I'm wondering if Biden and the WOKE folk didn't throw their support behind Griner because it'd support so many causes... BLM, LGBTQ, and Flag Kneelers whereas Whelan doesn't appeal to any of these groups but supported their rights...

DUBAI, Dec 8 (Reuters) - The United Arab Emirates president and Saudi crown prince led mediation efforts that secured the release of U.S. basketball star Brittney Griner in a prisoner swap with Russia, a joint UAE-Saudi statement said on Thursday.

Griner arrived in the United Arab Emirates capital Abu Dhabi by private plane from Moscow after her release by Russian authorities, the statement said, as Russian citizen Viktor Bout, a former arms dealer, came in on another private plane from Washington after being released by U.S. authorities.

"The success of the mediation efforts was a reflection of the mutual and solid friendship between their two countries and the United States of America and the Russian Federation," the joint statement said.

It "highlighted the important role played by the leaderships of the two brotherly countries in promoting dialogue between all parties".

Saudi Arabia had scored an earlier diplomatic victory in September by securing freedom for foreign fighters captured in Ukraine, at a time of tension between Riyadh and Washington.

Their mediation reflects efforts to show their ties with Russia are of benefit to Washington, which had accused Gulf oil producers of siding with Russia when OPEC+ agreed in October to cut oil output targets over U.S. objections.

Ex-Kremlin aide on Brittney Griner release: ‘Putin outplayed Biden’

A former adviser to Russian President Vladimir Putin said Thursday the prisoner swap that sent Brittney Griner back to the US in exchange for arms dealer Viktor Bout was a win for Moscow — and made America look weak.

“Putin outplayed Biden,” Sergei Markov wrote in a scathing post on his Telegram channel

Markov praised Griner as an “excellent athlete” but said she was less important to the US than Bout is to Russia.

Prisoner swaps with the West should be “all in our favor,” he wrote.

Griner, 32, was detained on Feb. 17 at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo Airport after Russian authorities found vape canisters with cannabis oil in her suitcase. She pleaded guilty to drug charges and was later sentenced to nine years of hard labor in a Russian prison camp.

The US has never looked weaker than we do currently. Biden has done absolutely nothing to strengthen the US: From the fuck-up that was the Afghan withdrawal, to then allowing Russia to proceed with an invasion; granted Putin would have pushed anyway, but he absolutely knew that this sitting President was too pussy ass to stand up to him. To now releasing a known threat to American lives in exchange for a fucking basketball player (that hates America anyway).

Face it folks, we are not the nation we were, and we never will be. I don't see any way to recover from this idiot in chief.

Ridiculous, but fits Brandon’s vote buying history
Go Brandon!!

Andrei Soldatov, a Russian journalist who specializes in the security services, said that he was worried about the precedent set by Washington’s agreeing to trade an arms dealer for a basketball player who committed a minor offense.

“Back in the days of the Cold War, it was always about professionals against professionals, one spy against another,” he said. While the United States must contend with public demand at home to return a hostage, the Russians can “ignore it completely,” he said.

Folks, this isn't Mad Magazine's Spy vs. Spy. Deals like this are putting we the people in grave danger... Some of us tried to warn you that it would get this bad. I hope it doesn't get too much worse, but I think it's coming, no matter what I hope for... :banghead:

Griner is a two-time Olympic gold medalist, Baylor University All-American and Phoenix Mercury pro basketball star, whose arrest made her the most high-profile American jailed abroad. Her status as an openly gay Black woman, locked up in a country where authorities have been hostile to the LBGTQ community, injected racial, gender and social dynamics into her legal saga and brought unprecedented attention to the population of wrongful detainees.
