Court documents state Aiden Kinnee, of Springfield, is charged with second-degree arson in the case.

According to the Springfield Fire Department, on March 19, crews responded to a fire involving a detached shed in Springfield at around 11:30 a.m.

Crews said the structure was a total loss. Ten cats belonging to a female victim who was living inside the shed died in the flames.

Nine of the ten cats were removed from the shed, and each exhibited varying degrees of fire-related injuries. The tenth cat could not be separated from its crate, as the plastic crate had deformed from heat exposure and solidified onto the cat. The victim was not present at the time of the fire, crews said.


Security camera footage allegedly shows Kinnee, the victim’s boyfriend, walking toward the shed at 11:23 a.m., which was out of the camera’s field of view. Three minutes later, Kinnee was seen walking away from the shed, with smoke being seen in the camera frame seconds after he left. The victim later identified the man in the footage as Kinnee.

Investigators said the victim showed them her phone, which contained a Facebook Messenger notification from an account belonging to Kinnee. One message, sent at 11:34 a.m. on March 19, said, “Prison sounds better than this. (Explicit) it. I’d hurry back if I were you. Already started.”

On March 23, Kinnee allegedly continued to contact the victim via Facebook Messenger, saying, “They didn’t deserve that. But I did what I did.”

On April 9, Kinnee was found in Springfield and taken into custody by Springfield Police.

Kinnee stated in an interview at the Greene County Jail that, before the fire, he had been using methamphetamine and was under the influence when a friend suggested he burn down the shed where the victim and her cats were staying, court documents state.

Kinnee later admitted that he went to the location and ignited a box against the exterior of the shed, and that the fire quickly grew. He stated that he had hoped the cats had been removed but believed they were likely still inside, investigators said.
