A Billings man is accused of assaulting a toddler in January.

Adam Paul Walker, 35, is charged with aggravated assault, a felony, and driving a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol or drugs, first offense, a misdemeanor. He made his initial appearance in Yellowstone County Justice Court on Friday.

A toddler, roughly 14 months old, was taken to the emergency department at St. Vincent Healthcare in January and later flown to Salt Lake City for further treatment, according to charges.

The child had “massive” hemorrhages in both her eyes and brain damage that could potentially cause blindness, a doctor told the Billings Police Department detective on the case. If the child survived the injuries, the doctor said, she would need long-term physical, occupational and speech therapies.

The doctor said the injuries could not plausibly be explained by an accident, pre-existing medical condition or by reasonable discipline.

Walker admitted to driving drunk to the emergency room when the child was taken in, charges state.

Walker is not the father of the child.

Walker told a detective he hated the child but declined to provide a full statement without an attorney.
