EDGEWATER, Md. — ... officers were called Jan. 30 to South River High School in Edgewater for a possible sex offense involving a teacher and a teenage student.

Police said school administrators told investigators that they received information that the teenage victim and a teacher were seen together initiating inappropriate contact.

The teacher, Meredith Susan Barry Martin, 37, of Davidsonville, was immediately removed by the Anne Arundel County Board of Education from having any further contact with children

Police said investigators interviewed numerous potential witnesses and Martin. The teenage victim submitted a written statement to the Board of Education confirming Martin had inappropriate contact with the victim, police said.

On Jan. 16, detectives interviewed the victim, who said they had numerous sexual encounters with Martin in the Davidsonville and Edgewater areas.

Working with prosecutors, police charged Martin with five counts of sex abuse of a minor, eight counts of fourth-degree sex offense involving a person in the position of authority and two counts of perverted practice.

I always think of Tennille Whitaker, the teacher in Elko, Nevada when I read about these (endless) cases to keep my perspective clear on the horrendousness of this type of crime.
She destroyed her beautiful family, caused humiliation in her small town for all 4 of her victims, which led to one of them committing suicide.

Biology teacher, 39, found NOT GUILTY of having sex with her teen boy student after jury found boy lied under oath

Meredith Susan Barry Martin, a former Arundel County, Maryland, high school teacher, has been acquitted of charges that she sexually assaulted a teen student, the Capital Gazette reports.

Once a biology teacher at South River High School, 39-year-old Martin, who hails from Davidsonville, was found not guilty of five counts of having intercourse while in a position of authority.

She was also found not guilty on five counts of a similar but different charge — five counts of sexual offense by a person in authority.

The other charge, of which she was found not guilty, was count of unnatural or perverted practice and sex abuse of a minor.

It took the jury only two hours to return not guilty verdicts on all the charges against Meredith Susan Barry Martin.

Martin’s attorney, Thomas Morrow, stressed to the jury during his closing arguments that the student who accused her of sexual assault had lied under oath.
