On Monday March 1, seven Dachshund and Terrier mix puppies were found in a taped up box on Highway 83. A passerby noticed the box and opened it and brought the puppies to Abilene Animal Services.
"They could have suffocated or overheated, it's crazy," said Animal Services Director Mike Bricker.
The puppies are healthy but suffering from ringworm. They are getting daily baths and medical care to treat the disease.
"What is going to clear it up are those medicated baths everyday," said Rescue The Animals volunteer Joanne Bentley.
Animal advocates said it will take several weeks for the puppies to get healthy. They expect to ship them to rescue groups in Wyoming and Florida in a few months where they will be adopted out and find forever homes.
