A Columbus mother has been charged after police say her 3-year-old son accessed an unsecured gun and fatally shot himself at their home on Columbus' Southeast Side.
Carley Dials, 29, has been charged with involuntary manslaughter in connection with the shooting death of her son, Cartier Smith. Police said that Cartier found an unsecured handgun in the home and accidentally shot himself.
According to a complaint filed by detectives, Dials and Sean Perrin, 31, were asleep in an upstairs bedroom of an apartment. Before they went to bed, Dials picked up a handgun off the floor of their bedroom that belonged to Perrin, court records say. Police said that Dials wedged the handgun between the mattress and the wall before the pair went to sleep.
At around 8:50 a.m., Cartier entered the bedroom and somehow found the handgun and shot himself. Dials called 911 while Perrin fled the scene, police said.
Cartier was transported to Nationwide Children's Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 9:51 a.m., according to the complaint.
Dials remains in the Franklin County jail.
Columbus police arrested Perrin later on Sept. 22. Court records and Columbus police say he had an active warrant for a possible probation violation, and was charged with having weapons while under disability, meaning he was not allowed to have the gun that Cartier shot himself with, due to a prior felony conviction.
I hope this woman has learned she was just a wet hole with an apartment to this "boyfriend"
