2 arrested in connection to murder of pregnant teen girl in Phoenix
Police say two suspects are in custody after a pregnant teen girl was found dead at a Phoenix park earlier this month.
Two men in Arizona have been arrested for allegedly fatally shooting a pregnant 16-year-old and her unborn child, who was was found dead in a park last month. Jurrell Davis, 36, who authorities say was the father of the victim's child, and Jechri James-Gillett, 18, were both taken into custody last week and charged with two counts each of murder in the slaying of Zariah F. Dodd.
According to a news release from the Phoenix Police Department, officers just before 6 a.m. on July 5, responded regarding a report of "unknown trouble." Upon arriving at the scene, first responders said they located an unresponsive female suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. Emergency medical personnel with the Phoenix Fire Department reached the area a short while later and pronounced the victim dead.
Detectives with the department's Homicide Unit took over the investigation and were able to identify the victim as Dodd. A subsequent autopsy revealed that Dodd was about 22 weeks pregnant at the time of her death.
According to the report, authorities have evidence showing that Dodd at about 8 p.m. on July 4 left her home at the Sunshine Residential group home in Surprise, Arizona, telling her family that she planned to meet with the father of her unborn child. That evidence also indicates that Davis was the person who picked Dodd up from the residence.
Deputy County Attorney Ashley Stetson told the court that prior to her death, Dodd was about to undergo a formal forensic interview with investigators looking into charging Davis with unlawful sexual conduct for impregnating Dodd.
The prosecutor also reportedly emphasized that Davis and Dodd were known to be "dating" and that DNA testing performed on Dodd's unborn child confirmed that Davis was the father of her child.
Man killed girl pregnant with his baby before sex abuse interview with cops: Prosecutor
Jurrell Davis, 36, and Jechri James-Gillett, 18, are accused of killing a 16-year-old in Arizona who was pregnant with Davis' child.
The man accused of murdering pregnant 16-year-old Zariah Dodd in Phoenix is facing new charges likely related to another case with an underage girl in the West Valley.
Jurrell Davis, 36, was back in court on a grand jury warrant on Friday night. He now faces an additional 20 felony charges, including sexual exploitation of a minor, luring a minor for sex exploitation, child enticement using electronic devices and sexual conduct with a minor. Davis is also facing eight misdemeanor counts for disobeying a court order. His bond was set at $150,000 cash-only.
These charges are likely related to a separate criminal case where Davis was allegedly involved with another underage girl in Avondale.
Detectives in Avondale told Arizona’s Family that Davis had asked for sexually explicit photos from a 17-year-old girl, who had an order of protection against him filed by her mother in August 2024. Her mother found out and told the police.
In July, detectives were conducting surveillance on Davis after the 17-year-old had run away from Glendale in May. He and the girl were spotted in his car at a Phoenix-area apartment, according to police. Officers said Davis had a gun in his car, which wasn’t allowed since he had a felony conviction from 2008 regarding child abuse. Police arrested him on July 15, and he’s been in jail since.
