Some good Samaritans discovered a dozen cats in a car in a parking lot.
Animal control officers say the heat in the car registered over 100 degrees.
In the car a bowl of food was knocked over, the food was covered in feces, and the car smelled like urine and was full of garbage.
A humane officer says three cats were found dead in the vehicle. Two cats escaped. Seven were taken to the animal shelter alive. They are expected to recover.
One kitten in the car was so tiny it still hadn't even opened its eyes yet.
Investigators say the car owner will appear in city court later this month on 12 counts of animal cruelty. Humane officers filed the charges.
Officers said when they arrived, they found two adult cats and a kitten had died. Two cats had escaped and the remaining seven were taken to the animal shelter in poor condition. There was food in the car but no water and it was covered in urine and feces, according to officers.
Officers said the woman, Crystal Nance, 49, claimed she had been recently evicted. The cats were in the car since Monday and temperatures reached more than 100 degrees, officers said.
Nance is facing 12 counts of animal cruelty and is expected to appear in court at the end of June.
The animal shelter is trying to rehabilitate the remaining seven cats.
