Haltom City police and the state are investigating the death of a 2-year-old boy who suffered burns and other injuries.
The child, Lyfe Flores, died Monday at Parkland Memorial Hospital. The cause of death remains undetermined but should be released today, according to the Dallas County medical examiner’s office.
The child’s injuries were “very devastating,” his paternal grandparents, Mike and Kim Hamilton, told KTVT-TV (CBS 11). The couple said Lyfe was staying with his other grandparents when he was hurt.
The Hamiltons said Lyfe suffered burns on his hands, feet and rear. He was missing two front teeth and had knots and bruises on the back of his head.
“The death itself is under suspicious circumstances, so we’re investigating the criminal aspect of it,” said Haltom City Detective Ray Beshirs.
The boy was scheduled to receive a skin graft Monday, but his heart stopped before the procedure could be performed, according to CBS 11.
Lyfe’s 5-month-old sister was placed in foster care immediately after her brother’s death, according to Marissa Gonzales, a spokeswoman for Child Protective Services.
CPS had prior contact with Lyfe before his death, Gonzales said in an email.
