Haltom City police and the state are investigating the death of a 2-year-old boy who suffered burns and other injuries.

The child, Lyfe Flores, died Monday at Parkland Memorial Hospital. The cause of death remains undetermined but should be released today, according to the Dallas County medical examiner’s office.

The child’s injuries were “very devastating,” his paternal grandparents, Mike and Kim Hamilton, told KTVT-TV (CBS 11). The couple said Lyfe was staying with his other grandparents when he was hurt.

The Hamiltons said Lyfe suffered burns on his hands, feet and rear. He was missing two front teeth and had knots and bruises on the back of his head.

“The death itself is under suspicious circumstances, so we’re investigating the criminal aspect of it,” said Haltom City Detective Ray Beshirs.

The boy was scheduled to receive a skin graft Monday, but his heart stopped before the procedure could be performed, according to CBS 11.

Lyfe’s 5-month-old sister was placed in foster care immediately after her brother’s death, according to Marissa Gonzales, a spokeswoman for Child Protective Services.

CPS had prior contact with Lyfe before his death, Gonzales said in an email.

Burns to his hands, feet, and bum are getting me the worst. That's torture! Poor little boy, I wish his other set of grandparents had him instead of the den of grandmonsters that killed him. Doesn't matter if someone else in the house did it, torture like this can't be hidden. They all knew. Rot in hell.

Based on the article above, CPS had prior contact with Lyfe before he died....and he was living with one set of grandparents. I'm guessing this means he was probably taken away from his actual parents and placed with them. Poor guy, couldn't get away from the abuse :(

awe... It is always harder when they are super cute and wearing pajamas one of. Y kids actually own. Sigh

I've always liked Luke. Yes, I know, Star Wars, but I don't care. I just think it's a classic. I like Logan too.

Poor wee man. I wonder if his sister had injuries too or if this was another bizarre case of only one child being singled out for abuse. I'll never understand that. :(

A grandmother has been charged in the scalding death of a 2-year-old boy whom Child Protective Services had placed in her custody just weeks before.

...

Lyfe, often called Gabe, died April 4 as doctors were preparing to give him a skin graft for burns across much of his body — the apparent result of bathwater burns that his grandmother left untreated for days.

The toddler was also missing teeth and had bruises and knots on the back of his head.

Haltom City police were searching for Patricia Flores, who was appointed Lyfe’s legal guardian after CPS removed him from his parents’ home this year. She turned herself in Thursday morning at the Frio County sheriff’s department and faces a charge of child injury.

A bail bondsman accompanied her to the sheriff’s office. She remained in the jail Thursday afternoon.

Police say Flores, 43, did not seek medical help for six days after her grandson was injured.

Police and paramedics were called to Flores’ house on Haltom Road just before midnight March 30. Police on Thursday released 911 audio of the grandmothers call.

“He’s heaving really bad. His eyes are rolling back,” Flores tells a dispatcher, sounding alternately panicked and annoyed.

She says the boy burned himself “a couple days ago,” while a child babbles in the background of the call.

Lyfe’s injuries had caused an infection by the time paramedics were called, and he died four days later.

“The only thing we could think of was his little body went into shock,” said Kim Hamilton, the boy’s maternal grandmother.

OMGGGGGG....(hiding my face in my hands) No no no no!!! Children and burns!! I can't even...I just can't. This poor poor little soldier. Another story that makes me want to believe in Heaven in the hopes he's being cradled by an angel... Hugs and kisses like he deserved. Now, as for Jaba The Hut....if there were other children besides the two, I bet she fucking ate them. I wanna pop her like a giant boil and watch her sloppy, pus and innards slap out on the floor.

HALTOM CITY - hardly ever looking up, Patricia Flores spent most of her time in court Tuesday with her hands over her eyes and her head lowered.

The grandmother from Haltom City pleaded guilty Monday to felony murder of her 2-year-old grandson, Lyfe Flores.

Tuesday began her sentencing phase.
[....]
Family audibly sobbed as photos of Lyfe from the ER were shown to the jury. Tuesday marked exactly one year since the little boy died.

The sentencing phase continues Wednesday morning. Flores is free on bond for now; she faces between five to 99 years in prison.

I wonder where his parents learned their methods from?

I agree. Abuse and dysfunction spans generations sometimes and I hate this practice of placing a child with other family members during a crisis. Plus it breeds anger and resentment in what is usally already a fractured family.
