An 18-year-old American student is in custody in Paris, suspected of throwing her newborn baby out of a third-floor window of a hotel, prosecution sources confirmed to CBS News on Monday.

The prosecution sources said police were called to the scene in the 20th district, in eastern Paris, early Monday morning. The newborn was rushed to the hospital with serious injuries, but did not survive.

The police juvenile protection unit has been tasked with investigating the homicide of a child.

Paris Match magazine reported that neighbors were awakened by screams at 6 a.m. local time and called emergency services.

Prosecution sources say they are looking into whether she had been in denial of her pregnancy.

The sources say the young woman was part of group of young adults traveling in Europe.

Imagine finding out one of your travel mates secretly gave birth and chucked their newborn out of the window...while you're sleeping away or whatever! Definitely would make the trip memorable, for all the wrong reasons. Idk about anyone else but the guilt would eat me alive. Why didn't I wake up? Why didn't I notice she was pregnant? Could I have done something?

It can happen. My sister didn't know with her second child until she was almost giving birth! She had severe stomach pain and went to the hospital and found out she was less than a month from having a little girl.
Barely gained weight, still had "light" periods (even though she was irregular anyways) and had no signs like her first pregnancy. She used to joke that if she hadn't been talked into going to the hospital, she might have given birth on the toilet thinking it was an upset stomach lmao
However, even if you don't know, you do know when you pop the baby out. Ain't no denying that.

Mia McQuillin, 18, was part of “a group of young people traveling in Europe” as part of a gap year between high school and college, French authorities told the DailyMail.

Authorities are investigating whether McQuillin, of Bend, was suffering a case of “denial of pregnancy” and was unaware she was pregnant or not able to accept she was pregnant.
