WASHINGTON (TND) — After the primary defeat of Wyoming Republican Liz Cheney, all 10 of the House lawmakers who supported the impeachment of Donald Trump after the Jan. 6 insurrection know their political fates.
Of the 10 Republicans who voted to impeach Trump, only two survived a primary election ahead of the 2022 midterms, Reps. Dan Newhouse of Washington and David Valado of California. Four others, Reps. Anthony Gonzalez of Ohio, John Katko of New York, Adam Kinzinger of Illinois and Fred Upton of Michigan, decided to retire instead.
Cheney joined Reps. Tom Rice of South Carolina,
Peter Meijer of Michigan and Jaime Herrera Beutler of Washington as lawmakers who were defeated by a Trump-backed challenger as the former president continues to advocate for the replacement of anyone who supported his removal from office.
Conservative lawyer Harriet Hageman handily defeated Cheney in Tuesday night’s primary, winning by more than 35%. Hageman rose to political prominence following Trump’s endorsement, while Cheney stepped up her attacks on Trump that cost her a spot in GOP leadership and ultimately her seat in Congress.
Even before the election had started, there was speculation about a potential presidential bid for Cheney as her defeat was widely anticipated in all public polling. She left her options open for running for the Oval Office in an interview Wednesday morning.
“That’s a decision that I’m going to make in the coming months, and I’m not going to make any announcements here this morning — but it is something that I am thinking about,” Cheney
said on NBC’s “Today.”
