A Bluefield man and woman have been arrested after bludgeoning an 81-year-old woman with a baseball bat and marble rolling pin in an effort to get money for drugs, authorities said Saturday.

Wanye Hartley, 44, and Angela M. Graham, 41, both of Bluefield, were charged with malicious wounding, attempted murder, felony conspiracy, assault during the commission of a felony, domestic battery, domestic assault, violent crimes against the elderly, first-degree armed robbery and fraudulent use of an access device.

Patricia Hartley told officers she had been beaten by Angela Graham, the girlfriend of her son Wayne Hartley, at approximately 8 p.m. Adams stated in his report that Hartley was “remarkably coherent for her age and injuries.”

She said that Graham beat her with a marble rolling pin and cut her wrist with a paring knife, Adams stated in his report. He photographed her injuries. She appeared to have a deep laceration to her right wrist, severe bruising on her face and body, and an obvious injury to her head which appeared to be from some sort of blunt force trauma which opened part of her scalp and exposed her skull.

Patricia Hartley was transported to the Bluefield Regional Medical Center and later transferred to Charleston Area Medical Center, Adams said in his report. She is listed in critical condition at CAMC’s Intensive Care Unit.

Police later learned from medical personnel that Patricia Hartley had a severe laceration to her wrist all the way to the tendons which required 21 stitches to close, five staples in her head to close the scalp wound, several broken ribs, facial fractures, and a brain bleed, Adams stated.

At the station, Graham signed a Miranda Waiver Form and agreed to give a confession. Adams said Graham told him and Detective Fox that she and Wayne Hartley are addicted to dilaudids, which they take intravenously, and that they had been talking about taking his mother’s debit card two days earlier.

Graham said she had been without drugs for two days and had made it through the withdrawal period, Adams said. She stated that she was just mentally craving drugs, and said Wayne was upstairs in the bedroom watching television when she went downstairs to try to steal his mother’s debit card.

In her statement to investigators, Graham said she was unable to find the debit card. Patricia Hartley was taking a shower, so she picked up a marble rolling pin and waited on her outside the bathroom, Adams said. Graham said she hit the 81-year-old woman about six times without knocking her out, and dragged her to the basement door. Hartley screamed for her son.

“Graham said she made a joke out of it saying, ‘Wayne isn’t coming to help you. He is sick, too,’” Adams said.

Graham stated that she shoved the woman down the stairs, and that she hit her head on the sledge hammer lying near the bottom step. Wayne Hartley appeared and Graham told him, “I think I killed your mom." Wayne Hartley said to call an ambulance, but Graham asked about the debit card. Graham stated she told him to go upstairs and she would let him know when she had money “to take her and get high.” Wayne Hartley returned upstairs.

Adams said Graham then stated she saw Patricia Hartley struggling, got a red baseball bat and hit her in the face at least a dozen times. Graham stated that she saw Hartley was still conscious and thought, “I am going to have to kill this woman, I have already went this far.”

Graham stated that she found a paring knife, went back to the basement, and slit Hartley’s wrists “pretty deep,” Adams said. At one point, Graham said Patricia Hartley told her to “turn the lights off and let me close my eyes and die.”

Later, after telling Wayne Hartley what had happened, Graham said she went back into the basement and told Patricia Hartley, “I am a drug addict, you did not do anything to deserve this. Yes, you were good to me, and I want to apologize. After I get high I will be sorry that I done it.”

Patricia Hartley asked if her son had put her up to it, and Graham replied, "No."

And finally, Graham became agitated at one point while in a holding cell and stated to Detective Fox, “I f****** loved him and he got me to kill his mom.”

Such an utter betrayal to the mother.
Life behind bars until mom passes, then beat them both to death.

What a monster this girlfriend is! And the son I'd just as bad! How could they do this to an elderly lady? I hope she has recuperated from the physical and emotional trauma.

Having said that, I wish I had a marble rolling pin. I should get one.

Surreal conversation .....

Wayne W. Hartley & Angela M. Graham
I thinking she might have been hit with a bat a few times herself.
I can say one thing about getting pre-trial confinement, it sure does clear up meth scabs.

A West Virginia man charged with his girlfriend in the brutal attack of his 81-year-old mother has been sentenced to 40 years in prison.

Wayne W. Hartley and 41-year-old Angela M. Graham were arrested Jan. 20. Authorities said Graham beat Patricia Hartley with a rolling pin and baseball bat, pushed her down the stairs and cut her wrist. A detective’s report said the couple then left with a stolen debit card and withdrew cash for drugs.
Angela M. Graham was sentenced to three to 15 years for attempted murder and a determinate sentence of 60 years for robbery first degree. Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Janet Williamson said the earliest possibility for parole will come in 18 years, "but that's not going to happen."
Graham addressed the court before she was sentenced. She said that she was looking forward to her time in prison so she could get her life back into order. She apologized to Patricia Hartley and said that she hoped Hartley would be able to return to her home. Hartley said in her statement that due to the emotional and physical trauma inflicted by the attack, she was unable to return to her house.

"Good luck, Ms. Graham," Sadler said after sentencing her. "I think the court showed you much more mercy than you showed Mrs. Hartley.
