Court documents released in the arrest of a Butler, Indiana man show the infant that was “ejected” from his vehicle during a police chase in Ohio was left on the side of the road in freezing weather for about one hour before they were found.
The City of Bryan Police Department in northwestern Ohio shared on Monday that they were searching for 32-year-old Zachary Chervenka, who was wanted on active warrants out of DeKalb County.

They say Chervenka fled from officers after being spotted at the Bryan Walmart store on Sunday evening, leading them on a high-speed pursuit with two children inside his vehicle.
According to court documents, Chervenka fled from officers on a chase that reached over 100 miles per hour, blowing through eight major intersections and failing to stop at nine stop signs.

They say he continued driving recklessly for about 15 minutes as at least 19 other drivers were nearby.
At some point during the pursuit, court documents say Chervenka “allowed a 9-month-old to be elected from his vehicle”, leaving the baby on the side of the road during below-freezing temperatures for about one hour until the child was rescued.
Documents did not detail how exactly the infant was “ejected” from the car. The Williams County Prosecutor’s Office said he was taken to an area hospital with serious injuries.

Bryan police said the pursuing officers did not see the child being ejected from the car and later called off the chase because of hazardous weather conditions and high speeds.
A 5-year-old girl was also in the car during the pursuit and was later located by officers, but no further information about either child was shared.
Chervenka was taken into custody by officers with the Edgerton Police Department on Monday afternoon.

He is charged with fleeing law enforcement and two counts of child endangerment.

A man accused of leading officers on a high-speed chase that left an infant injured last year has been sentenced to more than six years in prison after pleading guilty in two Williams County cases.

Zachary Chervenka, 32, appeared in Williams County Common Pleas Court on Monday, where Judge Rhonda Fisher accepted his guilty pleas and imposed the prison terms. The sentence stems from a Dec. 1, 2024, police pursuit in Bryan as well as a separate stolen-property case.
Chervenka pleaded guilty to felony and misdemeanor charges that included failure to comply with an order or signal of a police officer, endangering children, trespass into habitation and aggravated possession of drugs.
Overall, Chervenka was ordered to serve six years and six months in the Ohio Department of Corrections. That term will be served consecutive to a three-year sentence he previously received in a Defiance County case.
