A Madison man was convicted for the drowning death of his granddaughter that happened on Memorial Day in 2022.
Tony Burks was found guilty of negligent homicide and sentenced to one year in jail.
In April 2023, Burks was indicted for “recklessly causing the death of 1-year-old Zaviah Garner” and was charged with manslaughter.
According to a 2022 criminal complaint, Burks was grilling when the child got into the pool. The complaint also stated that Burks was under the influence of “some substance” at the same time.
During the trial, it was discovered that Burks was “hitting a bong” when the drowning happened. Two witnesses were also called to the stand, one of those being the mother of the child who died.
