A baby’s death that is part of an ongoing investigation in West Carrollton has been ruled a homicide, according to Montgomery County Coroner Kent Harshbarger.

Averi Grabans, 1-month-old, died at Dayton Children’s Hospital on Sunday. Harshbarger said she died as a result of blunt force trauma to the head.

A review of the autopsy by News Center 7 showed Grabans had bruises to her head and neck. She also had a skull fracture and brain damage.

Family members said Grabans was hurt while being watched by a babysitter.

“He hurt her,” Grabans’ grandmother Tracie Buckley said. “I don’t even know if I can handle knowing exactly what he did to her if it comes out.”

Police have not announced any arrests in the case and details about what happened were not immediately available.

Buckley told News Center 7 Grabans’ organs were donated, including her heart and liver, and they are thankful part of her will help another child live.

“She stayed strong. She kept her little heart strong, so she could give it to somebody else,” Buckley said.

This action was a result of shaken baby syndrome, that was violent enough to cause severe brain damage and ultimately lead to her death.

An 18-year-old West Carrollton man was charged with murder in the death after a 6-week-old girl he was reportedly babysitting was taken to the hospital with a skull fracture and other injuries.

Charles F. Pulley is facing murder, felonious assault, endangering children, involuntary manslaughter and reckless homicide charges, according to Miamisburg Municipal Court records.

The charges are connected to the Aug. 23 death of Averi Grabans. The baby died of blunt force trauma to the head, and that she suffered a skull fracture, hemorrhages and contusions on her head, according to Montgomery County Coroner Kent Harshbarger.

Pulley was dating the baby’s mother and watched the girl at his East Shannon Avenue home while the mother was working, according to court records.

On Aug. 19, the mother realized Averi had multiple bruises and swelling on her head after taking the baby home.

“She confronted Pulley about the injuries and he convinced her they were caused by a bad car seat,” the affidavit read.

The next day, Pulley was babysitting the girl again when he called the baby’s mother and said she “was not acting right.”

In a picture he sent to the mother’s phone the baby’s arms were out to her side and her eyes were “fixed to one side,” a West Carrollton detective wrote.

The mother left work and took Averi to the emergency room. She was admitted to Dayton Children’s Hospital’s PICU Ward with life-threatening injuries. Averi died three days later.

During an interview with police, Pulley said he dropped his cell phone on the baby and that she fell from the couch on the first day he was watching her, according to court records.

“On the second day, he said he accidentally hit [the baby’s] head on a door jamb as he was going from the hallway to the kitchen,” the affidavit read. “Pulley told several stories as to how [the baby] was injured.”

:(

That baby looked like a relative of mine when she was born.

My relative survived much longer than 1 month, let's say that.

“Pulley told several stories as to how [the baby] was injured.”

Yeah, I bet he did. Excellent that they called murder on this one.

Destroy that baby-killer!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! with the proverbial something or other.

BULLET TO THE HEAD

I wonder if it is desperation that makes these dicks of the moment utter such mind-shatteringly stupid things when they're caught or if they really are that stoopit.

She took the baby back to him after the first signs of abuse :( Stop getting pregnant by deadbeats and then finding a replacement dick to beat your child.

I really don't want to hear anyones testimonials - if you are pregnant and a man tries to get with you there is something wrong with and if you entertain it their is something definitely wrong with you.

At 6 weeks, the mum goes back to work, how long could she have known this male? That sweet little dear looks like my baby did at that age. He tells her the car seat caused the first bruise, but tells investigators he has a wicked sofa and a bad doorframe! This guy should have to wear a picture of the baby with a signboard telling how he beat her to death, just so his pen mates know what he did!

A West Carrollton man was sentenced to life in prison following his conviction on murder charges in the death of a 6-week-old girl.
Charles Pulley, 20, was sentenced to life in prison but will not be eligible for parole until after he serves 18 years, a spokesperson for the Montgomery County Prosecutor’s Office said in a media release.

Pulley was babysitting Averi Grabens, his girlfriend’s daughter, on August 19, 2020. The mother saw bruising on her daughter’s head after Pulley was watching her.
The next day, Grabens’ mother left work to come home and take the infant to the hospital after receiving a text message from Pulley, according to court records. The text message contained a photo that made Grabans’ mother believe the infant needed to go to the hospital immediately.

Grabans was taken to Dayton Children’s Hospital where she died three days later.
An investigator from the Montgomery County Coroner’s Office testified in court during the trial, saying the 6-week-old girl suffered two bruises on her forehead, a contusion on the top of her head, a skull fracture and brain bleeding.
