Thai police deny suspects confessed to beach murders under torture
Critics of Thai police say the investigation into the deaths of two British backpackers on Koh Tao last month has been unprofessional and that the Burmese men accused of murder gave forced confessions. Thai authorities rejected these allegations.

Thailand beach murders: Hannah Witheridge's family beg for removal of graphic crime scene images circulating online
The distraught family of murdered Brit backpacker Hannah Witheridge last night “begged” for horrific pictures of her corpse to be removed from the internet.

In a moving statement ahead of her funeral on Friday they said they were going through “indescribable agony.”

And in a telling sentence they added: “As a family we hope that the right people are found and brought to justice.”

In recent days there has been widespread speculation in Thailand that police have arrested the wrong men.
[...]
The family said: “Time makes the pain of this horrendous tragedy no easier to bear.

“The past three weeks have been unimaginably difficult and there are no words that can adequately describe the heartache and despair that our family is experiencing.

“As we continue with our plans for our beautiful Hannah’s ‘party’, our thoughts are with David Miller’s family who are suffering the same indescribable agony.”
[...]
“Our family have been further traumatised by reports that there are numerous unnecessary and senseless photographs circulating across the Internet.
“We beg that Hannah and David are afforded privacy and dignity through the removal of these pointless and insensitive reminders.

“Hannah was a fun, vibrant and beautiful young woman who will be sorely missed by all who knew her.
“She was dedicated, ambitious and would have made an amazing difference to the lives of many families through her chosen career as a Speech and Language Therapist.

Hundreds of people are expected to attend Hannah’s service at St Mary’s Church

which will be followed by a private burial.
Asking for privacy on the day, they said: “Due to the nature of her passing, our beautiful girl has had little privacy.

“Therefore, we would like to take this opportunity to ask that Hannah be allowed a well-deserved day of privacy on Friday whilst we join her many friends in a celebration of her life.”

David's funeral took place on his home

“The suspects saw them kissing and were aroused, so they attacked and got rid of the man and proceeded to rape the female victim,” said National police chief Somyot Poompanmoung"
So they were together now or what?
This is just crazy... everyone is saying something different! Sorry but I cant believe the thai police anymore. I can imagn them forcing someone for a confession.
Also I was always wondering how they could say it was David and Hannah on the video as u could see nothing cause the quality isnt good..

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/art...e-workers-confessed-killing-British-pair.html

they said that hannah shared a cigarette with her attackers, if what the Burmese guy is saying happened - they were watching the couple and got aroused and attacked them - then how would she have been able to share a cigarette with them?

... So much seems wrong.. and I dont think these guys will get a fair trail! And that would be important.. I wonder if
we will ever find out what really happened?

What did Davids and Hannahs friends say? I mean they must know what their friends were doing.. Did they meet to make out? did he save her when he saw her being attacked?

Once again I have to feel sorry for Davids girlfriend aswell..

Two Burmese men accused of killing British tourists on the Thai island of Koh Tao have retracted their confessions, their lawyers say.

The pair now say they did not commit the murders and did not see what happened, according to their lawyers.

Thailand's National Human Rights Commission said on Monday that it had found evidence that the two suspects, Zaw Lin and Win Zaw Htun, were physically abused by the police.

I thought this investigation had been taken over, or assisted by, the FBI and the MI5, no?
Either way, in a country where they say she was asking for it because she was beautiful, I would be seriously suspicious of acts or investigations by their LE.

I thought this investigation had been taken over, or assisted by, the FBI and the MI5, no?

Not so sure about "taken over", but they are certainly going to be helped, whether they like it or not.

The investigation into their deaths has been widely criticised and over the weekend it was announced that police from the UK would be flying out to assist with the investigation.

Last week the Foreign Office summoned the Thai charge d'affaires to express concern about how the case was progressing.

Criticism has been voiced about the failure to seal off the crime scene after the killings, and about an early police claim that no Thai person could have committed such an act.

P.S.: Totally agreed on the "because she was beautiful"-comment!

I saw them and was going to bring them up. I do think the two were having sex when attacked and then she might have been raped or they were just killed outright. The pictures are very gory and he was definately hit from behind while she was killed while laying there

Key evidence that led to two men being charged with the murder of a pair of British backpackers on an island in Thailand could be re-examined.

Zaw Lin and Win Zaw Htun, both 21-year-old bar workers from Burma, are accused of their murder last September.

Their defence lawyers are set to request that exhibits and DNA evidence are re-examined ahead of a trial.

The Burmese pair also face a rape charge and are set to stand trial on 8 July.

The lawyers for two men charged with the murder of a pair of British tourists in Thailand have expressed concern that key forensic evidence will not be re-examined before trial.

Zaw Lin and Wai Phyo have both repeatedly stated their innocence.

Their defence lawyers have asked for the forensic evidence gathered by Thai police to be sent to independent experts.

But the judge in the case has said that he will not rule on the matter until the first day of the trial.

In October, both defendants said that they had been beaten by local police into confessing to the murders.

The bodies of Miss Witheridge and Mr Miller were found on a beach in the popular tourist destination on 15 September. Mr Miller died from drowning and a blow to the head, while Miss Witheridge died from head wounds.

The victims' families have said they are keen to see the "right people" convicted.

So...all we know for sure is that a Thai hoe killed this pretty little tourist??? Yeah the Thai gov't need to be ashamed and replaced.

Wow. Not hard to tell who the intended target was. They mutilated that poor girl.

i hope they have semen DNA on the two they arrested, because from our viewpoint and news articles, these people completely bungled this investigation. Hopefully since the Brits and FBI stepped, there is good, solid evidence against these two.

And I will now take Thailand off my bucket list.

Two British tourists killed on a Thai island appeared on more than a dozen security cameras in their final hours, a court in Thailand has been told.

The trial began earlier this month and, when it resumed on Wednesday, police told the court CCTV footage showed Ms Witheridge and Mr Miller visiting two bars on the island with friends, hours before they died.

According to the Reuters news agency, Police Colonel Cherdpong Chiewpreecha told the court how footage from 17 cameras along a road on the island helped investigators trace the British pair's movements.

I know this thread has been around for a year but everytime I read the title, I always, for an instant, think Garden Hoe is the name of a third person killed in Thailand on a beach. I hope I'm not the only one.

My brain starts skipping words and I think the female victim is being called a hoe and I get offended for a moment because she's a victim and we shouldn't be shaming her. I do it every time.

The men accused of killing two British tourists on a Thai island have failed in their bid to see a confidential Metropolitan Police report.

Zaw Lin and Wai Phyo deny murdering Hannah Witheridge, 23, of Norfolk, and David Miller, 24, from Jersey.

[...]

Lawyers for the accused asked a British court to order disclosure of a police report in the hope that it might help their defence, but this was refused.

Rejecting the application, Mr Justice Green, sitting at the High Court in London, said: "There is nothing in the report which is exculpatory or would be of material assistance to the claimants in the operation of their defence in the course of the trial."

Koh Tao murders: Two Myanmar men sentenced to death for murder of British backpackers

Zaw Lin and Win Zaw Tun will face execution for the killing of David Miller, 24, and the rape and murder of Hannah Witheridge, 23, on the picture-postcard resort island in southern Thailand.

A panel of three judges delivered the ruling on the neighbouring island of Koh Samui.

"Both defendants are guilty of murder for which the penalty is the death sentence," an unnamed judge told the court, adding that they were also "found guilty of rape and conspiracy to hide the crime".

The pair both deny killing the British pair, whose battered bodies were found on a beach on September 15, 2014.

prosecutors said the evidence against the men was rock solid, including DNA traces found on Ms Witheridge's body as well as the suspects being in possession of Miller's phone and sunglasses.

Two Burmese men convicted of murdering two British travellers on a Thai beach have lodged appeals.

Zaw Lin and Wai Phyo were convicted of the murders in a Thai court and sentenced to death in December.

The appeal against the convictions and sentences was lodged at Koh Samui Court by May Thein and Phyu Shwe Nu, the mothers of the Zaw Lin and Wai Phyo, lawyers said.

The parents then visited their sons at Bang Kwang Prison in Nonthaburi, where they have been held since January.

One of the advisors, Andy Hall, said: "We have major problems with the judgments, particularly over the DNA evidence, and we don't believe the court can say beyond reasonable doubt that Zaw Lin and Wai Phyo were responsible for the events which took place in September 2014."

Two men convicted of the murders of two backpackers in Thailand will be executed after a court threw out their final appeal - despite serious concerns they were tortured into confessing to the brutal crime.

Their appeal was rejected by Thailand's supreme court on Thursday.

However, doubt has since swirled around the validity of Phyo and Lin's confessions and police competence has been called into question.

Lawyers for the two convicted men claimed the evidence in the case was mishandled and they had made their confessions under duress.

But at their trial, a well-known Thai forensics expert testified that the prosecution's DNA evidence did not link the defendants to the scene.

The expert also alleged that police had failed to properly control the crime scene and mishandled the DNA evidence.

It is believed the pair is being used as scapegoats for the murders.

But the court rejected the defence arguments and in December 2015 convicted both defendants of murder and sentenced them to death.

At the time, Human Rights Watch said the verdict was "profoundly disturbing", citing the defendants' accusations of police torture that were never investigated and questionable DNA evidence linking them to the crime.

In a 2017 appeal, the guilty verdict was upheld, and now the final appeal has now also affirmed the conviction.

The men's lawyers said they would be seeking a royal pardon for the pair.

If that fails, they face death by lethal injection.

While there had been a pause in the use of the death penalty in Thailand since 2009, that ended in June last year when a man was executed by lethal injection for murdering another man for his phone.
