TAMPA -- A 41-year-old Tampa woman has been arrested in the death of her 3-year-old granddaughter.
According to Tampa Police, Carida Lissettes Cobb was caring for Yanelli Vasquez on Dec. 13 when the child was fatally injured in a bathtub.
An autopsy was performed, but before the results were announced, Cobb attempted suicide by taking "a large amount of pills," police said.
Cobb was released from a hospital and arrested Friday night after the autopsy "disproved her account" of how the child died, police said.
Emergency personnel were called to a home on the 7200 block of S. Juanita Street on Dec. 13 and found the toddler in cardiac arrest in the bathtub. Yanelli also had multiple injuries to her head, body, arms and legs, according to an arrest report.
At the time, Cobb told investigators Yanelli had acted out in the tub because she didn't want her hair washed and she may have hurt her back on a soap dish. The Hillsborough County Medical Examiner's Office determined that the child had "extensive internal lacerations" were caused by blunt force.
The manner of death was ruled a homicide.
Greiving family and friends left remarks about Vasquez on her funeral service website:
"Her gentle presence and her tender smile will always remain a special part, of all the wonderful memories that will live forever in your hearts."
"Although Yanelli's time on Earth was so short; the memory of her will last forever."
Family members say they can't believe she won't be here for Christmas and her life ended in such a terrible way.
