TAMPA -- A 41-year-old Tampa woman has been arrested in the death of her 3-year-old granddaughter.

According to Tampa Police, Carida Lissettes Cobb was caring for Yanelli Vasquez on Dec. 13 when the child was fatally injured in a bathtub.

An autopsy was performed, but before the results were announced, Cobb attempted suicide by taking "a large amount of pills," police said.

Cobb was released from a hospital and arrested Friday night after the autopsy "disproved her account" of how the child died, police said.

Emergency personnel were called to a home on the 7200 block of S. Juanita Street on Dec. 13 and found the toddler in cardiac arrest in the bathtub. Yanelli also had multiple injuries to her head, body, arms and legs, according to an arrest report.

At the time, Cobb told investigators Yanelli had acted out in the tub because she didn't want her hair washed and she may have hurt her back on a soap dish. The Hillsborough County Medical Examiner's Office determined that the child had "extensive internal lacerations" were caused by blunt force.

The manner of death was ruled a homicide.

Greiving family and friends left remarks about Vasquez on her funeral service website:

"Her gentle presence and her tender smile will always remain a special part, of all the wonderful memories that will live forever in your hearts."

"Although Yanelli's time on Earth was so short; the memory of her will last forever."

Family members say they can't believe she won't be here for Christmas and her life ended in such a terrible way.

I can't even imagine, when my grandson was born, things were a bit strained between the two families. This little blessed gift was given to our two families and at that MOMENT, nothing else mattered, between BOTH families. This child gift took every bit of issue between us and it went right out the window. TWO WHOLE FAMILIES stopped every little bit of sniping and focused ONLY on loving and making sure this baby was brought into love. No matter what. This is why I have so much Hope.

The woman portrayed her granddaughter's death in the bathtub as a tragic mishap. But doctors saw puzzling wounds on 3-year-old Yanelli Vasquez.

They found bruises on Yanelli's back and forehead in various stages of healing. Some of them didn't match the account provided by the grandmother.

And evidence pointed to previous allegations of abuse against the grandmother, Carida "Charity" Cobb, 41, records show.

A Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office report released Monday provides new details about Yanelli's death on Dec. 13 and shows that Cobb had previously been investigated — and cleared — after a report that she beat the girl's 2-year-old brother.
[...]

Since 2011, Cobb has had "permanent guardianship" of Yanelli and her brother because of their mother's substance abuse and due to "environmental hazards and family violence," said the sheriff's child abuse report, produced for the Florida Department of Children and Families.

Four other children of the mother, Maria Vasquez, 27, live with another relative.

The records released Monday said investigators received a report in April 2012 that Cobb "beat the crap out of" Yanelli's brother because he was crying.

Cobb told investigators she had simply "popped" the boy three times on his bottom with an open hand to discipline him at school.

"Mrs. Cobb denied causing any injury and no evidence was observed when the child was seen by investigative officials," the report said. So the complaint was closed without action, though the report does not make clear what agency investigated.

At 4:45 p.m. Dec. 13, Cobb told investigators she left Yanelli in the tub unattended so she could start dinner. Cobb, the report said, suffers from multiple sclerosis and is in a wheelchair.

Cobb said she heard the child jumping and playing in the tub and told her to stop. She said Yanelli responded, "Yes, ma'am."

Then, Cobb said, she heard a noise. She called for Yanelli, getting no answer. So Cobb said she went back to the tub and found the girl face up, gasping.

Cobb said she reached for Yanelli but lost her balance, fell out of her wheelchair and toppled onto the girl. Still, Cobb said, she slapped the child's face to revive her and used CPR.

Emergency responders found "Mrs. Cobb straddling the toddler and attempting to revive her by shaking her," the report said. "Paramedics had to remove Yanelli from underneath Mrs. Cobb" so that they could try to save the child's life.

Investigators interviewed Cobb's 17-year-old daughter, who said she believed she had heard Cobb beating Yanelli before, including once during a bath. The daughter, whose name was not released, said she had not seen the beatings but could hear the girl crying and screaming.

The daughter said Cobb previously noted that Yanelli reminded her of the child's father. The daughter said Cobb had abused Yanelli's father when he was younger.

There's no doubt I get frustrated with my grand kids, but I never force an issue. They test limits and try out their self determination. It's part of growing up and even old me remembers that. What a beautiful little girl, too. :bigtears:

You would think after the first 2 she would know what causes it.

The daughter said Cobb previously noted that Yanelli reminded her of the child's father. The daughter said Cobb had abused Yanelli's father when he was younger.

:stop: Hold the fuck up. Um who is the dad and what was he to them for the mom to have had a chance to beat him when he was little.

:wtf: The lastperson I would ever marry is the mom of someone that beat me when I was little.

Um who is the dad and what was he to them for the mom to have had a chance to beat him when he was little.
She's probably the dad's mother. He's probably the father of only 2 of the mom's 6 kids - which would explain why the other 4 kids are with a different relative.

Wow. I have 10 (yep, ten) grandchildren and love every one of them like they are the only one. If anything, I let them get by with too much. I can't imagine hurting them like this horrid, horrid woman did to that precious little girl. Hell has a special corner warming up just for her.

In her mugshot she looks like she doesn't give a shit.Grandmothers are supposed to spoil their grand babies, it's just the way it goes.My Grandma used to get so upset when my Mom would slap us.Funny thing is I don't believe my Mom was ever slapped as a child.
