A Passaic man faces 37 years in state prison after admitting in state court Wednesday that he sexually abused and killed his girlfriend’s 21-month-old daughter.
Akel A. Ackie, 25, must serve at least 29 years of his 37-year sentence before becoming eligible for parole, under the terms of his guilty plea to charges of aggravated manslaughter and endangering the welfare of a child. He faces sentencing Sept. 20 before state Superior Court Judge Raymond A. Reddin in Paterson.

Ackie twice last month rejected the state’s plea offer, prompting Reddin to revoke any future offers and order lawyers to prepare the case for trial. But, Reddin noted from the bench Wednesday, “I changed my mind and accepted a plea because I thought it would be in the best interests of the family.â€
Reddin said having relatives endure weeks of painful testimony would have been the alternative if he had not allowed Ackie to finally take the plea bargain and avoid a trial. Relatives of the victim have been involved in the case but were conspicuously absent from Wednesday’s plea proceedings. Passaic County Chief Assistant Prosecutor Joseph Del Russo said they simply could not bear to sit in court and hear the defendant admit to specific acts of violence against the child.

Through detailed questioning by Passaic County Assistant Deputy Public Defender Jon Iannaccone, Ackie, speaking mostly through “yes†and “no†answers, said he agreed to babysit the child on March 20 of that year while his girlfriend went to work at a green market in Hackensack.
He said he left the apartment twice, both times with the child. The first time, he said, he drove to another part of Passaic to pick up a male friend. They stopped on the way home so the friend could buy marijuana from a street dealer.
He said after they smoked it together at the apartment, he drove the friend home, again with the baby in the car. Ackie said on his way back to the apartment, he stopped at the supermarket to buy food for the baby. When he got home, he said he fed the child.
Ackie said he then undressed her, and inserted his fingers in her anus and vagina, using force to do so. This caused the baby to become “distressed,†he said. He shook the baby with great force before throwing the child down onto the hardwood floor, also quite forcefully.
The defendant said he brought the baby to bed but could see she was having difficulty breathing so he called an ambulance, who brought her to the hospital.
The baby ultimately died of brain injuries caused by his shaking and dropping her, and blunt force trauma from his inserting his fingers into her, according to medical reports.
