Porterville (KFSN) -- A Porterville couple is under arrest after a child pornography investigation also uncovered possible cases of molestation and rape.

Porterville police arrested 31 year old Steven Arthur and his ex-girlfriend Jennifer Thurman Thursday evening after discovering thousands of images and videos of child pornography.

Investigators have identified five girls who say they are victims and they believe there could be more.

Steven Arthur and his ex-girlfriend Jennifer Thurman are being held without bail after being charged with child molestation, possessing child pornography and rape.

United States District Court Judge Oliver W. Wanger Monday sentenced Steven Patrick Arthur, 34 of Porterville, to 120 years in prison for sexual exploitation of a minor.

Arthur and Jennifer Thurman were both found guilty of sexual crimes against children stemming from incidents in 2007 and 2008.

Should Arthur ever be released from federal prison, he will be subject to a lifetime term of supervised release. The 120 years is the maximum possible punishment for the four counts.

Federal prisoners must serve at least 85 percent of any prison sentence imposed, and there is no parole in the federal prison system, reported United States Attorney Benjamin B. Wagner.

In imposing the sentence, Wanger noted the tremendous impact the crimes had on the victims and their families, some of whom addressed the court. He acknowledged that since Congress has made child sexual exploitation laws one of its highest priorities, the sentence in this case needed to be appropriately long and severe.

Wagner stated, “The sexual exploitation of children is completely intolerable and, as this case demonstrates, will be vigorously investigated and prosecuted. The punishment in this case fits the defendant’s horrendous conduct.”

This case is the result of an investigation by the Porterville Police Department with assistance from the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Tulare County District Attorney’s Office. Assistant United States Attorney David Gappa prosecuted the case.

According to court documents, between September 2007 and January 2008, Jennifer Thurman and Arthur administered the mild tranquilizer Ativan to four minors who were staying at their house.

The couple placed the drug in Oreo cookies or drinks and then gave it to the minors. Once the minors were unconscious, the defendants produced still and video images of each defendant engaged in sexually explicit conduct with the minors. Both defendants filmed each other engaging in sexually explicit conduct with the minors.

At least one image depicted violence. Many of the images were then transferred to a computer or to compact disks.

Arthur entered no contest pleas to 14 counts of felony lewd acts on a child under 14, five counts of felony rape in concert by force, and one count of misdemeanor annoying or molesting a child. All of the offenses occurred at Arthur’s Porterville home between 2007 and 2008.

Arthur was also charged in Federal Court and found guilty. He is serving 120-year sentences in federal prison.

In addition to the 73 year sentence, Arthur was ordered to register as a sex offender for life.

35-year-old Jennifer Lynn Thurman was sentenced to 73 years in state prison.

Thurman, along with then boyfriend Steven Patrick Arthur, were indicted in October of 2009 by a Tulare County grand jury on multiple charges of child molestation involving several juvenile victims. Both Thurman and Arthur were also charged in Federal Court.

Thurman entered pleas of guilty to 14 counts of lewd acts on a child under 14, and five counts of rape in concert. All of the offenses occurred at Thurman and Arthur’s Porterville home between 2007 and 2008.

The offenses were discovered when Porterville police officers located several compact discs and a video camera containing videos and still images of Thurman and Arthur performing sexual acts on the juveniles.

In addition to the 73 year sentence, Thurman was ordered to register as a sex offender for life. All charges count as strike offenses under California law.

Both Thurman and Arthur were previously sentenced to 120 years in federal prison in February of this year for production of child pornography. Thurman’s state prison sentence will be served concurrently with her federal sentence.
