Joseph Chmielewski, 40, and Juliann Garner-Chmielewski, 35, were each charged with second-degree endangering the welfare of a child for failing to seek medical attention for the newborn, according to acting Bergen County Prosecutor Dennis Calo.

The baby was born Feb. 6 in the couple's apartment on Strong Street, Calo said.

Three days later, someone in the apartment called 911 to report "an unresponsive infant in medical distress," Calo said.

The infant was taken by ambulance to Hackensack University Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.

The couple is accused of "willfully (failing) to seek medical attention" for the baby after she was born.

Chmielewski and Garner-Chmielewski were also charged with possession of drug paraphernalia, the prosecutor said.

Chmielewski and Garner-Chmielewski appeared Monday in Central Judicial Processing Court in Hackensack and were released pending further legal action.

The investigation is ongoing, according to the prosecutor's office.

The mom looks like she's been dead six months. :O

Drugs are bad, k? At least the ones that do *that* to people...

These parents weren't a pair of young and dumbers, sperm depositor, 40 and sperm receptor, 35. I fumble around in my brain just a bit before adding the meth factor, the dime drops and I stop seeking WHY? answers.

They look dead in their eyes. She probably never even touched the baby or even gave a shit about bonding. Poor little soul :(

Wallington residents Joseph Chmielewski and Juliann Garner-Chmielewski were taken into custody on Monday after police say they failed to seek medical attention for their infant daughter after she was born last week.

Juliann gave birth to her on February 6 inside their home, but it wasn't until February 9 when the couple dialed 911 after the newborn became unresponsive. She later died at Hackensack University Medical Center.

Police believe the parents willfully failed to get their daughter medical attention in the days following her birth.

The couple has been charged with endangering the welfare of a child, while Juliann has also been charged with possession of drug paraphernalia.

I've seen them before too, not sure if it was here or somewhere else. but I definitely remember thinking that the female of the group looked more like a guy.

A Wallington man whose infant daughter died three days after a home birth last year pleaded guilty Wednesday to manslaughter and child endangerment charges.

As he stood shackled, Joseph Chmielewski’s voice quivered while he said he and his wife, Julianne, abused heroin during the pregnancy and never sought prenatal care. Rather than proceed to trial, Joseph Chmielewski agreed to a four-year prison sentence in exchange for guilty pleas on both counts.

“He’s extremely remorseful about what happened,” John Weichsel, his attorney, said outside the courtroom. “He felt this was the best resolution.”

Chmielewski, 41, has cooperated with the state by “clarifying certain questions the prosecutor wanted answers to,” Weichsel said. But the attorney stopped short of confirming whether his client is prepared to testify against his wife, who was also charged.

The harrowing case began in February 2018 with a 911 call for an "unresponsive infant in medical distress," court documents showed. The infant was pronounced dead at Hackensack University Medical Center, three days after her birth at home.

Julianne Garner-Chmielewski was scheduled for a C-section but failed to show up for the procedure, court documents showed. Instead of seeking medical care after the birth, the Chmielewskis used scissors to cut the umbilical cord and outfitted the baby with a heart-rate monitor.

The county medical examiner never publicly released a cause of death but told police that the lack of medical attention immediately post-birth, and the manner in which the umbilical cord was severed, could have led to or contributed to the girl's illness or death.

He told police he woke up one morning to his wife screaming in the bathroom of their Strong Street apartment. When he entered, he saw that his wife had given birth and was holding the baby over the toilet. He went to call 911, but said he was stopped by his wife, according to an affidavit of probable cause.

Three days after the baby was born, Garner-Chmielewski told doctors that she placed the infant in a swing with a heart rate monitor on while she took a shower. When she returned from the shower, she noticed that the baby wasn't breathing, according to the affidavit.

Heart rate monitor? Why do I find the idea that the two dead eyed, soulless heroin addicts pictured above had the wherewithal to even know what it is, never mind use one?
I’m calling bullshit.
