Joseph P. Lemay was sentenced Wednesday to 27 and a half years in prison for causing brain damage to his 3-month-old daughter that put her into a medically induced coma.

Lemay shook his infant daughter when she wouldn't stop crying. She got sick an hour later where Lemay didn't help her. The next day he shook her again and slammed the baby into the couch, which caused the child to have a seizure. Lemay did not take her to the hospital.

At the time Lemay was on probation and under order not to be in contact with the baby or her mother. The mother, Meghan Newman was the one who brought the child to the hospital. Doctors say it will be years before they know the extent of the baby's brain injuries and how they will impact her.

Judge Greg Potter also gave Lemay 20 years of extended supervision following his 27 and a half year prison sentence. Lemay will begin serving that sentence following his current 3 and a half year prison sentence for violating his probation.

When given the chance to speak in court Wednesday, Lemay said, "I wish I could take back everything I've done" before breaking down in tears.

Here's the fucking story back in April before the trial:
Joseph P. Lemay ... is in jail on a $100,000 cash bond ... for two counts of child abuse and two felony counts of child neglect.

... the baby's mother, Meghan E. Newman, 33, of Marshfield, with a felony charge of neglecting a child ...

Newman ... left her children, including their 3-month-old baby, home with Lemay. Newman left town with friends at 11:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 16.

[...]

Newman told a detective she knew Lemay could get violent at times. She said she would have a neighbor look in on him as a safety precaution when he was watching the children. She did not have anyone check on Lemay during her weekend away.

[...]

Lemay said he and Newman both knew he was not supposed to spend the night at her residence and he was not supposed to have contact with children as part of the terms of his extended supervision.

I fucking hope the piece of shit mother is being held accountable for both leaving her child with a known violent criminal and violating a court order, what a stupid fucking turdbasket.

I was wondering if they were gonna charge her dumb ass too
I couldn't find anything on any of the news sites, but Wisconsin seems to have an excellent judicial search website.

Here's what I got: Newman pleaded "No Contest" to "Neglecting a Child" and "Encouraging Parole/Probation Violation" and in October was sentenced to 90 days confinement and 2 years "Supervised Probation", with the added caveat that any future criminal hearings that these crimes would be used against her.
