I know this is an older case, but this asshole's trial is winding down and I didn't see anything posted about it. This guy deserves a page of his own for many reasons. Clearly he is all about himself and feels no remorse whatsoever for his heinous crime.

Closing arguments in the case of a man on trial for raping and murdering his 6-year-old cousin were postponed yesterday when a blubbering Ryan “Booda” Bois refused to step into court and face the jurors who’ll decide his fate.

The proceedings are scheduled to resume this morning in Norfolk District Court in Dedham.

Bois, 22, is no stranger to theatrics. On the day of his arraignment in Quincy District Court, he spit on a cop, two reporters and a television cameraman.

Bois’ defense attorney Beverly Cannone requested yesterday’s delay, telling the court her client was too emotionally fragile to press on.

David Traub, spokesman for Norfolk District Attorney William R. Keating, declined comment.

Last week, Cannone told jurors, “Ryan Bois is not a monster,” but rather “a very troubled, psychologically tormented young man.”

It was his 6-year-old cousin Joanna Mullin of Weymouth who prosecutors allege Bois tormented and killed.

The bruised and bloodied nude body of Jerome and Heather Mullin’s daughter, wrapped in a fitted sheet and comforter, was stuffed between the front and back seats of her grandmother Arlene White’s stolen Ford Explorer on Aug. 4, 2007, when police pulled over Bois, allegedly for leading them on a high-speed chase through Weymouth, Braintree and Quincy.

Upon his arrest, Bois, accused of packing an 8-inch knife and a packet of heroin, allegedly told Weymouth police officer Edward Hancock, “Shoot me. I’m a loser. You don’t even know.”

Joanna was sleeping over at her grandmother’s house in East Weymouth when Bois broke in through a screen window, raped the child and strangled her, prosecutors allege.

Bois had bounced around between the Home for Little Wanderers, the former state Department of Social Services and homelessness, and had lived with the Mullins during his senior year of high school until the couple, disturbed by his behavior, showed him the door.

Too bad officer Hancock didn't take him up on it.

Too emotionally fragile to "press on." You've got to be kidding. Hopefully he'll be so emotionally fragile he'll choose not to "press on" and will off himself in prison. Unless, of course, someone beats him to it.

We can only hope he saves the taxpayers the expense. Not before Bubba knocks his teeth out and well. . .you know.

I just can't believe this guy and all his whining. Tortured by demons my ass.

DEDHAM - Ryan Bois sobbed and looked down yesterday in Norfolk Superior Court as his lawyer told a jury that the defendant, accused of raping and killing his 6-year-old cousin, had been "tortured by demons."

"Ryan Bois is not a monster, not evil incarnate," Beverly J. Cannone said during her 10-minute opening statement.

Her client has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity. "He's a very troubled, psychologically tormented young man," she said, "and I'm going to ask you to judge him accordingly."

Bois, 22, also faces 10 other charges in connection with the slaying of Joanna Mullin of Weymouth in early August 2007. His lawyer is expected to argue that Bois had deep psychological troubles and was not of sound mind when he committed the crimes.

Assistant District Attorney Robert Nelson offered the jury a different explanation.

"I suggest to you that the defendant, for lack of a better word, was sane prior to going into the house that night," Nelson said, ". . . and when he left he knew what he did, that it was wrong."

Bois is accused of breaking into his grandmother's house and raping and strangling his cousin while she was at a sleepover. He allegedly wrapped her body in bed sheets and a quilt, stole keys to his grandmother's sport utility vehicle and put the body in the back seat. Prosecutors allege that Bois made a call on his cellphone, made arrangements to pick up drugs, and during the conversation asked how to dispose of a body.

Before opening statements, the jury visited the grandmother's house on Randall Avenue in Weymouth.

Nelson attempted to piece together for the jury the hours before and after the homicide. While talking, he used a projector and screen to display key places, such as the bedroom where the sexual assault allegedly occurred.

Nelson also displayed a picture of Joanna's body showing severe reddening on her neck. The faces of several jurors went slack as they looked at the photo, and when Nelson continued to give his opening statement with the image still on the screen, Judge Janet Sanders told Nelson's assistant to remove it.

According to prosecutors, Bois got a ride to his grandmother's house after spending much of the day at a cookout at a house about a mile away, arriving sometime after 10 p.m. Nelson said the attack occurred in a front bedroom.

"The attack of Joanna Mullin, the rape of Joanna Mullin, took place on this bed," he said, referring to a bed displayed on the screen. Nelson said Bois stole the keys to his grandmother's white Ford Explorer and also stole her cellphone and some money.

Bois, allegedly traveling at between 60 and 70 miles an hour on Washington Street in Weymouth, drew the attention of a Weymouth police officer on his way to an unrelated call at about 1:15 a.m. on Aug. 5. The officer, Edward Hancock, followed Bois and stopped him, but Bois sped off as the officer walked to the SUV. Hancock gave chase. At one point, Bois reached up to 100 miles an hour, driving through red lights, Nelson said.

Bois crashed into a taxi on East Howard Street in Quincy and fled the wreckage.

Hancock, a K-9 officer, was among three witnesses called to testify yesterday. As Bois fled the scene, Hancock said, he unleashed his dog, Hax. Hax caught up to Bois, and Hancock was able to apprehend him.

Hancock said Bois repeatedly shouted, "Just shoot me; you don't know what I did."

Hancock said he found Bois's ranting strange, given that he believed the suspect had violated speed limits and caused a crash. Hancock said he searched the SUV, finding the comforter wedged behind the front driver's seat and the back seat floor. He said he pressed down and felt what he believed was a dead animal.

"As I'm pulling the covers loose," he continued, appearing to choke up. "At that point, I'm able to observe two small legs and grayish feet."

Amen!

I'm sure the prisons are full of people who are "tortured by demons." Since when has that been a defense? I think the legal threshold for an insanity defense is whether or not you know right from wrong and he obviously knew right from wrong. He ran from the police when they tried to stop him and he told Hancock to shoot him, "...you don't know what I did."

How can the defense attorney actually say some of that garbage without laughing?? He's not evil, he's not a monster....he's troubled. He's emotionally fragile. Boo hoo. Is she actually expecting jurors to feel sorry for him??? HOLY COW! All of the drama and whining might actually be comical if it weren't for the dead child. God rest her soul.

The Mandarin characters tattooed on the neck of Bois, who stands accused of killing his 6-year-old cousin, have been the subject of speculation during his court appearances.

The characters can translate in English to “After Death,â€￾ and appear to have been done by “a Mandarin novice,â€￾ according to an expert in the Chinese language at the Boston Language Institute, who viewed an image of the tattoo.

The phrase does not carry any larger meaning than the two words, said the expert.

It’s likely that only Bois knew what he wanted to communicate with the marking, which, according to police booking photos, has been on his neck since at least early 2006.

[...]
Miller said it is common for the symbols to communicate something different to those who are literate in the language.

“You don’t know what it says,â€￾ Miller said. “Honestly, if you even make one line a little crooked, it makes a difference.â€￾

Miller said there could easily be something lost in translation in the message “After Death.â€￾

“It just doesn’t sound like something someone would put on there (intentionally),â€￾ he said. “It doesn’t really have a meaning. It doesn’t make any sense.â€￾

The symbol isn’t Bois’ only tattoo. He also has the word “Soldierâ€￾ tattooed in cursive on one of his hands.

DEDHAM —

Arlene White clutched one of her daughter’s hands, wearing the same somber expression and feeling the same emotion she had worn and felt throughout the murder trial of her grandson Ryan Bois.

And while teary family members of his victim smiles and hugged after Bois was sent to prison for life, White’s expression did not change.

[...]

She had told Bois earlier that day that she did not want him to come over, partly because she had found out that he was not using money he borrowed to pay rent, which he had said he was doing.

White, who has been widowed twice, testified that she tried to get the children to sleep in a breezier room of the home because it was a hot night, but they insisted on sleeping in her bedroom.

[...]

White has since moved out of the home and is living with a sister, family members said.

Rest in peace Joanna.

that poor grandmother, she looks totally destroyed in that pic. She will never get over this, and will alway be tortured by what if's.

Fuck you Ryan Bois! A beautiful little girl violated and killed, and a family destroyed! I hope you live a long life behind bars, and suffer for every minute of it.

Guilty. Life and NO Parole

Awwww, Ryan does NOT look happy in the photo with this article. TFB you asshole! You will never see the light of day again.

DEDHAM —

A murder trial that reconstructed nearly the entire life of a troubled 22-year-old and revisited in excruciating detail one of the most horrific crimes the South Shore has seen ended with a guilty verdict and two life prison sentences without parole for the accused.

Ryan Bois stared blankly at a desk in front of him as the jury delivered its verdict Thursday in Norfolk Superior Court. He had taken in virtually every earlier stage of the trial the same way.

THE VERDICTS

GUILTY

- 1st degree murder
- Rape of a child by force (2 counts)
- Home invasion
- Kidnapping
- Larceny of a motor vehicle
- Larceny of property under $250
- Destruction of property under $250
- Failure to stop for a police officer
- Negligent operation of a motor vehicle

NOT GUILTY

- Possession of cocaine
- Operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license

After an impact statement from Joanna Mullin’s parents was read by one of Joanna’s aunts, an emotional Judge Janet Sanders called the crime “unspeakable ... worse than anything I have seen in my 14 years as a judge.â€￾

In addition to other charges, Bois was found guilty of first-degree murder, two counts of rape of a child with force and home invasion, all crimes that carry maximum life prison sentences. He was sentenced to two life terms without parole, which he will serve at the state’s maximum-security prison in Walpole.

The jury deliberated for about eight hours before rendering its verdict.

Bois broke into his grandmother Arlene White’s home in Weymouth in August 2007 and stole money from White’s purse before raping and killing Joanna in a guest bedroom.

Strangulation was determined to be the cause of death. The prosecutor said Joanna, a smiley, blue-eyed girl a month from starting the first grade, was strangled with the necklace she was wearing.

The tearful sniffling of family members’ broke the silence after the verdict was read. Neither Bois’ parents nor Joanna’s were in the courtroom.

James Mullin, one of Joanna’s uncles, said Joanna’s mother was kept abreast of the proceedings by cell phone throughout the trial.

“There’s no happiness here, folks,â€￾ Mullin told reporters on the steps of Norfolk Superior Court after the verdict was delivered. “This family has been ripped apart. Both families have been ripped apart. I only hope that there’s justice for Joanna, and we can try to sew this hole up a little bit.â€￾

Prosecutor Robert Nelson broke out in tears after the verdict, at one point slouching over a desk with his head in his hands. Nelson was even-tempered throughout the trial until he choked up during closing arguments on Wednesday.

“When you’re a little kid, six years can seem like an eternity,â€￾ Nelson told the jury Wednesday. “But Joanna Mullin, that was her life. Six years – that was her life.â€￾

Joanna had two younger brothers, Jeffrey and James. A sister, Jayne, was born about a year after Joanna was killed.

Janet Mullin Saucedo read the impact statement from Joanna’s parents, Jerome and Heather Mullin. It touches on how Joanna’s siblings will process the death as they grow older.

“Our son Jeffrey lost so much that night,â€￾ the parents’ statement reads. “He misses her terribly and cannot understand why his best friend in the whole world is no longer here.â€￾

The heart-wrenching trial took a toll on jurors. Moments after the sentence was imposed, four of them left the courthouse and met nearby for lunch.

Reached by phone, one juror said the group was hesitant to discuss the trial, fearful of affecting an appeal. First-degree murder convictions are automatically appealed.

“It was a very draining and emotional experience,â€￾ said the juror, who asked not to be identified. “We hope this decision brings some peace and closure to the family.â€￾

Bois wore no particular expression as court officers put him into a van about an hour after the trial ended. His attorney, Beverly Cannone, said he repeatedly expressed remorse.

“He’s expressed over and over again the fact that if he could take this night back, he’d do it in a heartbeat,â€￾ she said. “He loved that little girl.â€￾

There appeared to be no forgiveness for Bois from Joanna’s relatives. James Mullin thanked jurors for “seeing Ryan as the manipulator and deceiver that he is,â€￾ while Joanna’s parents, with whom Bois lived for a time, termed Bois’ actions “truly the ultimate betrayal.â€￾

I'd love to give him something to cry about.

Oh I'm sure he'll do plenty of crying during the appeal process. Hopefully, he spares everyone the bullshit and just goes and gets brutally rump bumped by his fellow prisoners. He'll cry about that too I'm sure.

Rot Ryan!

It sounds like this family really tried to help this non-contributing waste of human life. Grandma was giving him money to pay rent (which he did not use for that purpose) and he had even lived with Joanna's parents! So glad the jurors were able to see beyond the pathetic, "emotionally fragile" whiner and recognized him for the true dangerous, manipulative, evil monster he is.

Poor Grandma. Just breaks my heart for her and all the family.

RIP Joanna.

Poor Grandma. Just breaks my heart for her and all the family.

I feel unbelievably sorry for her. As marv pointed out in her comments, this woman will be forever haunted by what ifs.

One grandchild dead killed by another. I hope she can find some peace now that the trial is over.

I also hope Joanna's parents are able to finally put this behind them too.

What a sad case.

Me too. The family has been through enough without the agony of a trial. I really feel for all of them. Especially the grandmother.

Man, he just looks so evil. Thank goodness he will be behind bars for the rest of his life.

From 2016
Ryan Bois will spend the rest of his life in prison for killing 6-year-old Joanna Mullin after the Supreme Judicial Court on Thursday upheld nine of his 10 convictions in the case, including first-degree murder.

The state’s highest court has upheld the life sentence of a former Weymouth man who raped and killed his 6-year-old cousin at his grandmother’s house nine years ago.

The Supreme Judicial Court threw out Ryan Bois’s conviction on a home invasion charge, saying there wasn’t enough evidence to support it, but affirmed nine other convictions, including for first-degree murder, and left in place his life sentence without possibility of parole. Bois had asked the court to reduce the most severe charge to second-degree murder, which could have given him the opportunity to seek parole after serving part of his sentence.

Bois was arrested in August 2007 after he refused to stop for a police officer who saw him speeding and crashed into a taxi cab. While preparing to tow the car, which Bois had stolen from his grandmother, officers found the body of his 6-year-old cousin, Joanna Mullin, naked from the waist down in the backseat.

As he later admitted, Bois, then 20, had broken into his grandmother’s home earlier that night and ran into Mullin, who he raped and strangled to death. At trial, Bois’s lawyer argued unsuccessfully that he was not guilty of the murder by reason of insanity, citing his behavior after he was arrested and the nature of the crime itself.

In his appeal, Bois argued that his defense attorney was ineffective because she did not present mental health records that he said would have bolstered his insanity defense. The records, taken from his time at psychiatric hospitals and state facilities over the course of 18 years, starting when he was 5 years old, showed that he had been sexually abused as a child and was diagnosed with agitated depression, bipolar disorder and posttraumatic stress disorder.

The Supreme Judicial Court found that Bois’s lawyer could have made a strategic decision not to present the records because they may have undercut his insanity defense by showing that he’d been “doing well” and had a girlfriend three years before the murder. They could also have put him in a negative light, showing that he had a criminal record, was a member of a gang and was known to “manipulation situations by avoiding responsibility for his behavior.”

That little girl was adorable.
Hope his life behind bars is full of unsettling cruelty at the hands of his fellow inmates.
He is indeed evil.
