Two men have been formally indicted by a Palm Beach County grand jury and now face capital charges for the repeated sexual abuse of a 7-year-old girl.

The Palm Beach County State Attorney's Office announced the indictment of Josue D. Mendez-Sales 27, and Pablo N. Cobon-Mendez, 23, on Friday. They were both charged with counts of sexual battery on a person less than 12 years of age.

Both men, originally from Guatemala and living in West Palm Beach, were recently arrested after the young victim bravely came forward. Investigators say the abuse was not only frequent—it was brutal. According to police reports, the child was sexually assaulted nearly every day and beaten with a belt.

West Palm Beach Police Chief Tony Araujo called the allegations heinous during a news conference in late July.


“Both Mendez-Sales and Cobon-Mendez were arrested and transported to the West Palm Beach Police Department Headquarters where both suspects voluntarily confessed,” said Chief Araujo.

The two suspects, identified as Josue David Mendez-Sales, 26, and Pablo Neftaly Cobon-Mendez, 23, are both facing charges of sexual battery on a child less than 12 years old.

According to the arrest documents, police were notified on July 30 that a young girl told her babysitter she had been inappropriately touched by two men identified as Mendez-Sales and Cobon-Mendez. Police say the two men were known to the victim.

The babysitter notified the Department of Children and Families, which conducted the initial investigation with the child and notified law enforcement.

The child disclosed during the interview that Cobon-Mendez molested her "every day." The child also had fresh, visible bruising and said Mendez-Sales hit her with a belt.

Cobon-Mendez admitted to investigators in an interview that about two weeks ago, when he was intoxicated, he molested the young girl. He faces two counts of sexual battery on a child.

Mendez-Sales stated he had intercourse with the girl about five times, but could not detail specifics because he always did so when intoxicated. He said the first time it happened was about three months ago, and admitted to hitting the child with a belt as a form of discipline this past weekend. He faces five counts of sexual battery on a child and one count of child abuse without great bodily harm.

During an afternoon news conference, West Palm Beach Police Department Chief Tony Araujo described the case as "heinous."

The two men are illegals from Guatemala and 26-year-old Mendez-Sales is identified as the girl's father.

I hope they do a DNA test to confirm he actually is father and not some man who used her to get over the order. I have not seen any mention of a mother yet.

Thank you to the babysitter doe reporting the abuse and getting the 7-year-old out of this situation.

I wonder if they collect DNA from illegals accused and convicted of sexual abuse.

Fate can have a funny outcome if convicted. Prison may offer the ROI (return on investment) they so richly deserve... I'm think an SO tat should a company their sentence to ensure the don't repeat their offense after prison - should they leave under their own power.

According to previous reports, investigators say the abuse was not only frequent—it was brutal. According to police reports, the child was sexually assaulted nearly every day and beaten with a belt.

Officials say that a grand jury indicted Josue D. Mende Sales and Pablo N. Cobon Mendez in August for multiple accounts of sexual battery of a child under 12.

Their arrests followed an investigation West Palm Beach Police Department (WPBPD), which began after the victim disclosed the abuse to adults, per officials.

“The crimes committed against this young child are among the most horrific imaginable," said State Attorney Alexcia Cox. "The repeated abuse of a defenseless child, by Josue David Mendez Sales and Pablo Neftaly Cobon Mendez, is not only a violation of the law, it is a violation of our deepest human values."
