Jerald Hicks

Police in Nashville have arrested the mother and grandmother of a 17-month-old boy who starved to death in January.


The mother, 23-year-old Chisa Hughes, and the grandmother, 49-year-old Katina Ballard were taken into custody Wednesday morning.


Hughes's son, Jerald Hicks Jr., was brought to the emergency room at Centennial Medical Center on the night of January 24. He was pronounced dead upon arrival.

An autopsy later determined the boy died of starvation and hypothermia.


His father, 24-year-old Jerald Hicks, was arrested and charged with first-degree murder, aggravated child abuse, and two counts of aggravated child neglect in the days following his son's death.

Hughes did not live with the boy but saw him in early January. She is facing charges of first-degree murder and two counts of aggravated child neglect.


Ballard, who also did not live with the child, has been indicted on two counts of failure to report child abuse and one count of aggravated child neglect.


Hicks' two-year-old daughter was also taken to the hospital in January and found to suffering from severe malnutrition.
