I ofter wonder what became of Erik Schumann. His attacker, Tony Abrego, is surely out of prison by now.

"A man in Tuscon was left wheelchair bound and almost paralyzed after being attacked by a machete-wielding ex-boyfriend of a woman he met online.

Erik Schumann, 28, told Tuscon News Now that he was attacked during the second date with the woman in December 2014. Schumann said he had just moved to the area and was looking for a way to meet new people. So, after signing up for several dating sites, the man reportedly put a post on Craigslist."

" The victim, 28-year-old Erik Schumann, says he was attacked by a machete-wielding ex-boyfriend of a woman he met online, during their second date. It happened in December 2014 in the 2600 block of E. Copper Street near Tucson and Grant Road in midtown.

Like many others, Schumann who had just moved to Tucson from Seattle was looking for new f?riends, and the possibility of meeting that someone "special."

"Tucson is a wonderful, beautiful city, I suppose, but it's hard to get around and meet people. Everything is so spread out, plus I was so busy helping my family. just didn't have a lot of time," said Schumann.

Being a young, single man in the the city, he turned to the Internet to look for people like himself, those looking to make new friends. Schumann said he signed up on several dating websites online, including phone apps like Tinder and Meet Me. He said he was equally as interested in just platonic relationships, instead of a romance.

"I even put an ad in the strictly platonic section of Craigslist," said Schumann.

The harmless, friendly post on Craigslist is what has now left him wheelchair bound, and almost paralyzed. The post led him to a woman he instantly hit it off with.

"She was tall, thin. Looked like she could be a model," said Schumann.

Their first meeting was in public, the second date was more intimate. It was at her midtown home, and turned into an overnight stay.

"We were both in the master bedroom. It was about 3 a.m. Suddenly I hear somebody trying to come in, beat down the door. The lights flick on, here comes this man coming to attack me," said Schumann.

The attack lasted for a couple minutes. Schumann said he could hear the woman yelling for the man to stop in the background. Schumann said the man was armed with what turned out to be a machete.

"He's striking me with something in his right hand. I had no idea what it was, it felt metallic. Heavy and metallic," said Schumann.

Schumann said he was chopped and sliced with the 40-inch blade at least 31 times, according to what his medical reports. Nerves and tendons, severed. Schumann said he lost about 6 pints of blood in the attack. Even veteran police officers who showed up at the scene looked horrified at the sight.

"He was trying to decapitate me, no doubt about it," said Schumann.

Pima County Sheriff's officials said their Internet crimes unit was a busy one. Most crimes involved Internet fraud, but Deputy Courtney Rodriguez said those meeting strangers online should take precaution.

"It's never a good idea to go to stranger's house," said Deputy Rodriguez."

" The man, Tony Abrego, 31, who admitted to attacking a victim with a machete in June 2014 was sentenced to serve 7.5 years in prison."

“He’s taken a lot more than my ability to walk and use my hands. He’s taken away my dreams and my goals, and ultimately a part of my soul,” said Schumann."
