U.S. Rep. Elijah Cummings calls for an end to ‘hateful rhetoric’ among the nation’s leaders

U.S. Rep. Elijah Cummings called Wednesday for an end to “hateful rhetoric” among the nation’s leaders, saying “We are all sick of this.”

“We all want decency and respect,” the Baltimore Democrat said at the National Press Club in Washington.

It was his first major speech since Republican President Donald Trump’s lengthy string of tweets and comments sharply critical of Cummings, his hometown of Baltimore and his district, which Trump called “rat and rodent infested.”

Cummings, chairman of the House Oversight and Reform Committee, didn’t mention Trump by name in his call for civility, but referred to “those in the highest levels of government.”

He said the national dialogue has become so foul that his 10-year-old niece asked him recently if they were going to be put in cages.

In a question-and-answer period, Cummings repeated his earlier call for Trump to visit Baltimore.

“I want President Trump to come to my district — oh, God, I want him to come." Cummings said.

Jesus BuffsttGirl, WTF? Could you have twisted that more?

President Trump on Wednesday tweeted a video clip that shows Rep. Elijah Cummings describing his hometown of Baltimore as a “drug-infested area” during a Congressional hearing 20 years ago.

“The Radical Left Dems went after me for using the words ‘drug-infested’ concerning Baltimore. Take a look at Elijah C.,” Trump wrote.

On the 30-second clip, the Maryland Democrat says, “This morning, I left my community of Baltimore, a drug-infested area where a lot of the drugs that we’re talking about today have already taken the lives of so many children.”

“The same children that I watched 14 or 15 years ago as they grew up, now walking around like zombies. This is only 40 miles away from here,” he adds.

The clip was also posted earlier Wednesday by the Trump presidential campaign’s @TrumpWarRoom account.

Not at all, but then again, you see the world through Democrat colored glasses, so I can see why you might think so. No need to pardon you.

It's not, for the exact reasons I pointed out. Reread if you have issue. Not all murders are considered mass murder even if there are 4 or more victims. Intellectually, you know that. Gang violence and murder committed during robbery is not the same as crazy fuckers walking into a public place and opening fire. If Obama had stood on the world stage and called any other race rapists and criminals and spent YEARS making said race our biggest problem and enemy and then a bunch of nutso democrats started shooting up said race, you would be shitting all of your pants, like every single pair.

And you so love to call me a hypocrite. Cute.
They are all people who picked up a gun and used it to shoot multiple people, how the FBI categorizes these crimes doesn't change the outcomes. And once again, Trump said the some people illegally crossing the border were rapists and criminals. Which is completely true. He's made illegal immigration his biggest issue not a 'race', according to polls illegal immigration consistently ranks in the top 3 biggest concerns of American voters. Nutso Democrats tend to violently target opposition politicians and cops. Oh and ICE now.

If you want to play the 'irresponsible rhetoric' game, lets see you call out Obama for 5 dead cops, AOC for an attack on an ICE facility and Bernie Sanders for the bullet in Steve Scalise. You say you're not a hypocrite, so show us how even handed you are.

Trump heads for golf club holiday as summer storms loom
Now is the summer (vacation) of the president's discontent.

As Donald Trump prepares to leave on Friday for his annual August holiday at his lush New Jersey golf club, he's confronting a storm of crises, at home and abroad, that could set the course for his upcoming re-election bid.

With his poll numbers stalled and his ability to rally the country questioned, he's being tested by an escalating trade war with China that may slow the economy, rising tensions with both Iran and North Korea and, in the aftermath of the mass shootings last weekend, pressure to act on guns and face accusations of his own role in fostering an environment of hate.

The dark clouds are converging as the Republican president's bid for a second term takes on new urgency. Trump exudes confidence but as the two dozen Democrats eager to take his job sharpen their attacks, the White House — or, for the next 10 days, the clubhouse in Bedminster, New Jersey — will have to mount a multifront effort rooted in maintaining his base rather than trying to expand it.

"There are often presidents facing reelection who face an onslaught," said Douglas Brinkley, presidential historian at Rice University. "Those are the times when you need to heal the nation's wounds or make your case for a real change. But Trump long ago decided that he was going to try to be a president who divided and conquered to intimidate friend and foe alike."

Officials: Jeffrey Epstein, accused sex trafficker, dies

Jeffrey Epstein, the disgraced millionaire who was facing federal sex trafficking charges, died by suicide early Saturday in his Lower Manhattan prison cell, three law enforcement officials told ABC News.

Epstein hanged himself, law enforcement sources said. He was transported in cardiac arrest at 6:39 a.m. from Metropolitan Correctional Center to New York Downtown Hospital, according to sources.

Epstein, 66, was set to stand trial next year for allegedly sexually abusing dozens of minor girls in New York and Florida.

His death came less than three weeks after he was found unresponsive in his cell at the federal prison in Lower Manhattan, with marks on his neck that appeared to be self-inflicted, sources told ABC News.

He had been on suicide watch since the July 23 incident.

Epstein was arrested on July 6 for alleged sex trafficking of minor girls at his Upper East Side mansion and his home in Palm Beach, Florida. Some of the charges date back to the early 2000s.

Acosta was serving as President Trump's Labor Secretary amid the controversy over his role in the deal. He later resigned from that position.

Trump’s Trip to Dayton and El Paso: The Back Story

By the time President Trump arrived in El Paso on Wednesday, on the second leg of a trip to meet with people affected by mass shootings in two cities, he was frustrated that his attacks on his political adversaries had resulted in more coverage than the cheery reception he received at a hospital in Dayton, Ohio, the first stop on his trip. So he screamed at his aides to begin producing proof that in El Paso people were happy to see him.

One of those people was Tito Anchondo, who had lost his brother and sister-in-law, Andre and Jordan Anchondo, when a gunman opened fire on a Walmart last Saturday and killed 22 people. Mr. Anchondo traveled to the University Medical Center of El Paso on Wednesday to meet Mr. Trump, and as the president stood by and flashed a thumbs-up during a White House photo opportunity, the first lady, Melania Trump, cradled Mr. Anchondo’s 2-month-old nephew, whose parents had both been gunned down.

By Friday, the photo had been widely disseminated after it became clear that the infant had lost his parents in a mass shooting, and had been brought back to the hospital after being discharged earlier in the week. In El Paso, Mr. Anchondo said that the attention surrounding his visit with the president had only brought more pain to his family.

“It’s just been really hectic,” Mr. Anchondo said during a brief interview at the family’s auto body shop, adding that he and his family had received hounding hate calls after the photograph circulated, and that people were harassing him on Facebook.

The episode was one result of Mr. Trump’s frustration over his news coverage and of the angry reaction that by the end of the trip had led to a mishmash of White House-distributed photographs, tweets and videos that focused on the president instead of people affected by the shootings.

Mr. Trump first became aware of the negative headlines watching television aboard Air Force One, and bellowed at the small coterie of advisers traveling with him, including Mick Mulvaney, his acting chief of staff. He was especially upset after he saw footage of a news conference held by Senator Sherrod Brown, Democrat of Ohio, and Mayor Nan Whaley of Dayton, a Democrat, but no positive images of himself while visiting Dayton’s Miami Valley Hospital. Not long afterward, his aides began distributing photos and video of the president at the hospital flanked by selfie-taking doctors and nurses.

I know, it's a good joke. We all know what a horn dog Ole'Willie is. And we can all imagine what a frigid, man-hating sloth Hillary is.

But to have any chance of glimpsing the truth, we need to look at the facts.

The facts are, that out of the dozens of victims who have testified against Epstein none have implicated either Bill Clinton or Donald Trump in any wrong doing, And these witnesses, whose accounts corroborate each other would have mentioned it. They implicated many other powerful figures at all levels of the global elite right up to British royalty.

There are so many rich, powerful and connected people who had reason to wack Epstein. In this case the easy answer isn't the correct one.

Epstein’s Victims Say He Cheated Them in Death, Vow Justice

For 30 years Epstein evaded grasp of prosecutors and victims

Jeffrey Epstein, a financier accused of sex trafficking was found dead Saturday morning in his jail cell in lower Manhattan. He was accused of trafficking underage girls from 2002 to 2005.

Accusers say Ghislaine Maxwell was Epstein’s girlfriend and madam. She is now the prime target of those who seek to hold someone responsible for the alleged abuse of dozens of girls.

Epstein's abrupt death cuts short a criminal probe that could have exposed the inner workings of a high-flying financier with connections to celebrities and presidents.

Jeffrey Epstein’s Opaque Finances Could Become Focal Point for Investigators

The money, tens of millions of dollars of it, would flow among Jeffrey Epstein’s dozens of bank accounts, shell companies and, at times, charities linked to high-powered friends.

A convicted pedophile and accused sex trafficker who surrounded himself with an elite network of business and political leaders, Mr. Epstein enjoyed the trappings of great wealth: private jets, mansions, his own island. But much remains unknown about the sources of his wealth.

Legions of lawyers, bankers and accountants have been trying in recent weeks to solve that mystery, and their quest is unlikely to end after Mr. Epstein was found dead on Saturday morning. The answers could illuminate how Mr. Epstein allegedly operated a long-running sex-trafficking operation, whether he had help from others and who — including Mr. Epstein’s victims — will receive any of his remaining assets. It is not known if Mr. Epstein had a will.

Biden pens NYT op-ed calling for bringing back assault weapons ban

Former Vice President Joe Biden, a Democratic presidential candidate, is pushing for a reinstatement of an assault weapons ban in the wake of two mass shootings last week that killed 31 people.

"The 1994 assault weapons and high-capacity magazines bans worked. And if I am elected president, we're going to pass them again - and this time, we'll make them even stronger," Biden wrote in a New York Times op-ed published Sunday.

An assault weapons ban hasn't been in place since 2004, after the 1994 bill signed by former President Bill Clinton expired.

"We have to get these weapons of war off our streets," Biden wrote.

In Short-Staffed Jail, Epstein Was Left Alone for Hours; Guard Was Substitute

One of the two people guarding Jeffrey Epstein when he apparently hanged himself in a federal jail cell was not a full-fledged correctional officer, and neither guard had checked on Mr. Epstein for several hours before he was discovered, prison and law-enforcement officials said.

Those details emerged on Monday as Attorney General William P. Barr sharply criticized the management of the federal jail in Manhattan where Mr. Epstein, who was accused of sexually abusing dozens of teenage girls, was found dead on Saturday morning.

“We are now learning of serious irregularities at this facility that are deeply concerning and demand a thorough investigation,” said Mr. Barr, who, as the country’s top law enforcement official, is responsible for federal prisons.

“We will get to the bottom of what happened,” he added. “There will be accountability.”

Mr. Barr did not offer additional information about the problems at the jail, but questions have been raised about why Mr. Epstein had been taken off suicide watch just days after apparently trying to kill himself and then was left alone in a cell without close supervision.

Outrage as Trump administration weakens endangered species law

US President Donald Trump's administration on Monday finalized rollbacks to key provisions of the Endangered Species Act, a law supported by a large majority of Americans and credited with saving the gray wolf, bald eagle and grizzly bear.

The changes include removing a rule that automatically conveys the same protections to threatened species and endangered species, and allowing information on economic impact to be gathered when making determinations on how wildlife is listed.

In a statement characterizing the amendments as "improvements," Interior Secretary David Bernhardt said: "The best way to uphold the Endangered Species Act is to do everything we can to ensure it remains effective in achieving its ultimate goal -- recovery of our rarest species.

"An effectively administered Act ensures more resources can go where they will do the most good: on-the-ground conservation," added the former oil and gas lobbyist.

Democratic politicians expressed outrage, saying the rollbacks could push some species toward oblivion.

"For decades, the Endangered Species Act has protected our most vulnerable wildlife from extinction. Now, President Trump wants to throw it all away," tweeted presidential candidate Joe Biden.

"At a time when climate change is pushing our planet to the brink, we should strengthen protections -- not weaken them," he wrote.

"The administration's decision to dismantle the Endangered Species Act in order to benefit huge corporations will only further harm the environment. Congress should do everything it can to reverse this action," Democratic Senator Dianne Feinstein said in a statement.

Conservation groups also reacted with dismay, vowing legal challenges against what the nonprofit Sierra Club dubbed the "Trump Extinction plan."

Wow, I am truly shocked that you aren't jumping on the Clinton murder machine conspiracy. I really am.

Well, I never was one for conspiracy theories.

Stacy Abrams did in fact lose her election by 50,000 votes,
The Micheal Brown shooting was in fact justified,
Trump never conspired with Russia,
Epstein probably killed himself

I'm happy to call out BS conspiracy theories from from both sides. If only the media had the same integrity.

The Latest: States vow suit over endangered species rollback

California and Massachusetts say they'll go to court to fight the Trump administration's overhaul of the Endangered Species Act.

Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey and California Attorney General Xavier Becerra (hahv-YEHR' beh-SEH'-rah) said Monday that they planned to sue. It came hours after the administration announced broad changes to the way the government would enforce endangered species protections.

Both Democratic state prosecutors pointed to a United Nations report earlier this year warning that more than 1 million species globally are in danger of extinction.

Becerra told reporters that "this is not the time to go low, go slow or go backward."

Several conservation groups also have promised court fights. The administration says the changes will reduce regulatory burdens while still protecting struggling species.

So, is this a feelz thing, or are we just being hysterical because "TRUMP!"? Spider Monkeys are native to South and Central America, Lemurs to Madagascar and Red Pandas to Nepal, northern Myanmar and Central China. How much impact are we having on them where we are exactly? Sea Otters are considered "threatened and recovering" and ALSO have protection under the Marine Mammal Protection Act... You need better examples.

Just for some clarification, this is a gopher tortoise, native to a few southeastern states in the US, they're the state reptile of Georgia, and the state tortoise of Florida.
They live in underground burrows that they share shelter with over 360 other species, and are of the genus Gopherus, which includes all of the the tortoises native to North America.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gopher_tortoise

I have several living on my land, and we just leave them alone, as even picking one up to move it off the highway to keep it from being accidentally hit is illegal if caught.

Whaaaat!! I knew you're not supposed to mess with them but I had no idea that saving them from getting smooshed in the road was also forbidden. We've definitely relocated some off of busy streets before.

Still seems like the least worst option.

I have to say at this point, given everything that we know it seems like the most plausible scenario is that Epstein was 'allowed' to commit suicide. Possibly with little encouragement in the form of threats of a far more painful death. Or perhaps he was just surrounded by incompetent fools which is entirely possible. He was in a prison not a particle accelerator after all.
