Ellie-May Minshull-Coyle, aged 19 months, died last March in a flat she shared with her mother, stepfather and a lodger in Lostock Hall, Preston.

A cot had been tied to the bed frame creating a "monstrous cage", Liverpool Crown Court was told.

Lauren Coyle, 19, Reece Hitchcott, 20, and Connor Kirby, 20, each deny her manslaughter.

Prosecutor Christopher Tehrani QC told the court Ellie-May's bed had been pushed against a wall with sheets and bedding placed over the sides to prevent her seeing outside at the Ward Street flat.

The toddler was tied to the mattress of her bed with tight ligatures across her chest and legs and a duvet placed over her, the jury heard.

"By being restrained in her bed in a face-down position... Ellie-May's breathing would have become compromised," he told the jury.

Marks on her wrists and ankles suggested she had at some point been tied to the "cage" with blankets, Mr Tehrani said.

"This would have caused Ellie-May immense suffering, distress and upset," he said.

"Ellie-May's death was unnecessary, pointless and wholly avoidable."

On the night of her death, Ellie-May became unsettled, prompting Ms Coyle to send a strongly-worded Snapchat message to a friend suggesting he was irritated.

At about 06:00 GMT on 23 March, Ms Coyle messaged her father to complain about the toddler crying, the court heard.

When Sean Coyle arrived at the flat to check on his granddaughter about three hours later, he realised there was a "terrible problem".

Ellie-May was not breathing and, despite attempts to resuscitate her, she died at Royal Preston Hospital.

Ms Coyle, now of Collins Road, Bamber Bridge; Mr Hitchcott, of The Fieldings, Fulwood; and Mr Kirby, of Octavia Court, Huyton, each deny a count of causing or allowing the death of the child, and two counts of child cruelty.

The father of a toddler who died after allegedly being bound and forced to sleep face down in her cot today told a court how her mother blamed her boyfriend for the death.

Ellie-May Minshull-Coyle died aged just 19 months after being kept in a 'monstrous cage' built around her bed in the flat she shared with her mother, Lauren Coyle, 19, and her boyfriend Reece Hitchcott, 20, the court heard.

Coyle, now 19, had begun living with Hitchcott in December 2016 - the same month that she allegedly told the girl's father, John Minshull, that she had cheated on him with Hitchcott - and so he moved out of their first floor flat in the Lancashire village of Lostock Hall.

Mr Minshull, 19, told a jury today that he did not know if she was telling him the truth about the affair, because she had often lied to him, but he left anyway.

After their daughter died on March 23 last year he had a meeting with her at her parent's home to find out what had happened.

'She was blaming Reece. I didn't know if she was telling the truth or not.'

He said that she said Reece had used Velcro-straps to tie Ellie-May's ankles. 'She said Reece had got rid of the straps on the morning she was taken to hospital.'

The child was found by Coyle's father, Sean Coyle, who had called round after messages from Coyle overnight telling of her frustration with Ellie-May not sleeping.

He found Hitchcott crouching down by the side of the bed and he believed he was trying to wake Ellie-May, who was lying on her back.

Christopher Tehrani QC, prosecuting, told the court that when Mr Coyle looked at Ellie-May her eyes rolled back into her head and she looked 'clammy'.

'Mr Coyle now knew that something terrible had happened to Ellie,' said Mr Tehrani.

The sides of the bed not against the wall were enclosed by the slatted sides of a cot which were tied together with ligatures and tied to the bed frame, the court heard.

Sheets and bedding were allegedly placed over the sides of the 'monstrous cage' to prevent her seeing outside and there were no working lights in her bedroom.

A mattress was also covering the window, Mr Tehrani told the jury of six women and six men.

The little girl had allegedly been tied to the mattress of her bed with blankets tied tightly across her chest and legs and a duvet placed over her.

Her ankles were also tied together and the sleeping position compromised her breathing, causing her death, Mr Tehrani claimed.

There were also marks on the child's wrists and ankles, suggesting she had been tied to the 'cage' at some point.

A post-mortem examination carried out by Home Office pathologist Dr Alison Armour concluded her death was caused by 'forcible restraint by ligatures in a face-down position complicated by hyperthermia'.

A woman and her ex-partner have been convicted of causing or allowing the death of a toddler who was tied to a "cage" bed.

Ellie-May Minshull-Coyle was 19 months old when she died in March last year.

Liverpool Crown Court heard her bed at the two-bedroom flat in Preston was "turned into a cage", with a mattress and sheet also covering the window.

Her mother Lauren Coyle, 19, and stepfather Reece Hitchcott, 20, were cleared of Ellie-May's manslaughter.

The jury found the pair guilty of causing or allowing Ellie-May's death, one count of child cruelty by "caging" her to a bed and another count of child cruelty by restraining her in the bed.

Coyle, of Collins Road in Bamber Bridge, Preston, said the bed had been converted by Hitchcott, of The Fieldings in Fulwood, Preston, with the aim of getting the toddler into a routine of sleeping through the night.

She told the court that Ellie-May, her daughter by ex-boyfriend John Minshull, was her "world".

The couple's lodger Connor Kirby, 20, was cleared of all of the charges.

The baby was her world until her boyfriend decided that her baby needed to be put in a makeshift cage so he could dick her down with no disturbance.

@Satanica @Nell You were right

A woman and her ex-partner have been jailed for 10 years each for allowing the death of a toddler who was tied face-down to a 'cage bed'.

Lauren Coyle and Reece Hitchcott, both 20, were found guilty of causing or allowing the death of 19-month-old Ellie-May Minshull Coyle following a trial, but cleared of her manslaughter.

John Jones QC, defending Coyle, said she had been subject of a 'hate campaign' on social media and had been 'abandoned' by her parents during the trial.

He said: 'It must be remembered that Ellie-May had two parents. One now needs to be sentenced.

'That doesn't mean to say her sense of loss is in any way a reduced loss.

'Her loss is a profound loss and one that will be permanent in its nature.'

James Pickup QC, representing Hitchcott, said the defendant had been thrown out of home at 16, partly because of his cannabis addiction, and had lived on the streets and in supported accommodation before moving in with Coyle and Ellie-May.

He said: 'He was an incompetent and inadequate 'parent', a person doing his best in those circumstances to assist Lauren Coyle.'

So these two wastes of skin are actually the victims and deserve the empathy they did not show Ellie-May.

Who the hell cares at all about how they feel, they didn't have any feelings for Ellie-May. I don't care how depressed, young, stupid, or abandoned you are, you know all life forms need to breathe and tying a small child down face first is depraved indifference to me. 10 years does not cover it, at all.

Kicked out cause of a cannabis addiction at the age of 16... hated on by social media and abandoned by her parents cause YOU KILLED YOUR CHILD! Shut the fuck up. You did even worse things to that child than has been done to you... therefore you have no valid point and 10 years isnt long enough.
