Zechariah Dontae Mills and Michala Annette Morgan Raines were arrested after their 15-day-old daughter suffered severe lacerations to her mouth and esophagus, court records show.
The injuries required surgery and critical care.
The parents told law enforcement that Mills was bottle-feeding the infant when she began bleeding from her mouth. She was taken to Jefferson Memorial Hospital and then transferred to East Tennessee Children’s Hospital, according to the warrants.
Both parents were at the apartment when the injury happened, but couldn't explain how it happened. The warrants state that an ETCH doctor determined the injuries were caused by non-accidental trauma.
Both have been charged with aggravated child abuse, according to arrest warrants.
