A mother who blacked-up her daughter for Halloween insists she's no racist and has said anyone that thinks she is 'needs to get a grip'.

Nursery worker Claire Flynn, dressed her three-year-old daughter Sienna as a 'Lookie Lookie' man, a nickname which has previously been given to beach traders in foreign holiday resorts.

The 26-year-old from Scotland posted a picture of Sienna coated head-to-toe in black facepaint on Facebook in a post that read: 'Happy Halloween from Benidorm's finest......lookie lookie.'

But Claire is adamant that the costume choice wasn't intended to be offensive, and says anyone who thinks so needs to 'get a grip'.

Speaking to the Daily Record, Claire said: 'I'm not going to apologise for this or delete my post. If people want to be all PC about it they need to take a look at themselves. It's really not an issue.

'We were in Magaluf on holiday in September and Sienna got a toy monkey from the Lookie Lookie men. She loved them and wanted to go back and see them every day.

'That's when I had the idea. I'm just a creative person and that's what Halloween is all about.

'It's a kid in a costume wearing facepaint. People need to get a grip.

She at least did a very nice job of it, and the little girl looks really cute. (I love really dark skin.) If you were familiar with those holidays, you'd probably recognize what she was. I don't see it as racist but she didn't have to go so far as to change her daughter's skin color. People would've gotten it regardless and now she's world reviled. I think part of it is the presumption on the part of white folk that they know how people of color are going to feel, but they don't or just don't really consider anyone else's feelings at all. Of course, I could definitely be wrong in my own presumption, but I think that's one of the main reasons people get set off about it.

The history of "black face" portrayals is actually very insulting and demeaning. Even if someone today claims they are not intending to be insulting, the long history is still there.

It is in bad taste and the mother is just looking for attention at the expense of her daughter.
Agree, but I don't think it was evil or racist. Just dumb.
And admit it, she did a good job on the costume. She should channel that costume talent into her local community theatre group.

It's the black face that is offensive, not the rest of the costume. The kid could have been a white beach seller. They do exist.

My costume idea for Halloween this year was to glue some black sheep wool under my arms, put some purple streaks in my hair, add a fake nose ring, and wear a tank top.
Behold the Humorless Feminist!

Kid has the pose down and the costuming is of excellent execution.

So here's a thought.
Why is there black facepaint?

She’s from Scotland, they didn’t have a black face period like in the USA, offensive to us, but not there:muted::bag:
Scotland is Where Count Dankula was arrested for a hate crime for teaching his girlfriend's pug to do a "Nazi" salute to commands like. Sieg Heil, and "gas the jews",
It was a prank on the g.f. but of course he put it on YouTube.
It wasn't even funny because the pug could hardly raise his little doggy paw anyway.

Perhaps everyone should just stick to costumes and jokes about their own race and culture. Of course, someone would still get offended.

at first I thought this was a ploy for attention. But seeing that she is from across the pond, I don't think she meant any harm by it. Just didn't know the culture.

Exactly. @DIAFplease crapped my costume idea about the humorless feminist. But it's still my own race and culture.
...........
Q: How many feminists does it take to change a light bulb?
A: That's not funny!
