A 22-year-old Rahway woman argued with her mother twice on Sunday about going back to school and her living situation before stabbing her to death, according to authorities.
Malika Jones was charged with murder and weapons offenses after police arrived at the home shortly after 3 p.m. and found Inell Jones dead, authorities said.
An affidavit of probable cause filed by police states the mother and daughter quarreled around 7 a.m. and then again in the afternoon on the same topics shortly before the younger Jones used a kitchen knife to stab her 57-year-old mother once in the upper chest.
During the second argument, a man who was in the apartment with the women that day told to police that he heard Inell Jones yell that her daughter had harmed herself and needed to go to the hospital, authorities said.
The man also told investigators he heard dishes breaking in the kitchen shortly before police say Jones attacked her mother, authorities said.
After the stabbing, Malika Jones called 911 and told the dispatcher that her mother was unresponsive and that the stabbing was “an accident,” authorities said. She later claimed that her mother tried to hurt her, authorities said.
When police arrived, officers noticed Malika Jones had a cut on her wrist and that her shirt was bloody, authorities said.
