Woman Arrested After Friend's 4YO Son Found Dead in Atlanta Townhome

Jasmine Smoak was arrested Tuesday morning after a 4-year-old boy was found dead more than an hour away in an Atlanta townhome, authorities said.

Officers forced their way into the home “based on information received during the welfare check,” Atlanta police said.

Once inside, officers found the child dead. Emergency personnel attempted lifesaving measures but were unsuccessful, police said.

Smoak is charged with second-degree cruelty to children and concealing the death of another.

Atlanta police said Smoak is a friend of the child’s mother.

ok there was concern regarding the person caring for this child and the family wanted him back.... that raises lots of questions for me at least... why and how long did she had this child? if one or both parent put him in the care of this person where was his family from either his paternal or maternal side? why wasn't he put in their care? .. i tried to listen to the news clipping and i couldn't understand her first charge the other one being concealing the death of another ...i guess the news lady was maybe saying cruelty to children ... he sure was an adorable little one how could anyone harm a child i can't phantom it at all...

Investigators have charged a second woman with murder in connection with a child found dead in a southwest Atlanta home on Monday.

Authorities say Jasmine Jenkins will be charged with murder and first-degree cruelty to children.

The Atlanta Police Department tells CBS News Atlanta that officers were called to do a welfare check at a home on Monday evening. After officers and members of the Atlanta Fire Department forced their way inside the residence, they found the body of a 4-year-old inside. The child was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators tracked a vehicle believed to be connected with the case to Wilkes County. Early Tuesday morning, deputies arrested 32-year-old Jasmaine Smoak, charging her with second-degree cruelty to children and concealing the death of another. On Thursday, authorities said that Smoak now also is charged with murder, aggravated assault, and first-degree cruelty to children.

Officials have not shared many details about the investigation or what led to Jenkins' arrest. She remains in custody in Wilkes County and will be transported to Atlanta to be interviewed in the near future.

The family has said that Jenkins was afraid of Smoak and was locked up because she was stealing for Smoak.

Why did the mom leave her children with Smoak and not her family.

The surviving children are now with the mom's family and regardless of whether she is locked up for stealing for Smoak and was afraid of her - if she knew of any abuse she should be charged in the death of her child too.
