A public library in London had reportedly hired a self-described "anti-racist carnival troupe" to perform at a children's reading event. Said library is now reportedly apologizing because, wtf.

The so-called "anti-racist carnival troupe" reportedly performed a carnival act in costumes of Rainbow Dildo Butt Monkeys. Although I keep wondering if maybe somehow I stumbled upon 'fake news', but it is in fact all over DuckDuckGo at this point, so maybe this really happened. Somehow.

I think the name was made up by one of the witnesses at the library. heh.... not sure what they call themselves, although maybe it can be found on the archive.org version of their now-deactivated web site.

Perhaps they should've chosen less inflammatory lyrics then. It really doesn't seem like right wingers who have an agenda in this case. Even if you think it is a positive one, the song does have an agenda. Perhaps they should save their "tongue in cheek" humor for different subject matter. They knew exactly what would happen.
 
This page has a pic that I think the library thought it was ordering. Then the ol' rainbow butt monkey bait and switch. Apparently they hire local residents to help develop their own characters and no one caught this one ahead of time.

"Mandinga Arts offer an unreserved apology for the offence caused to residents, library employees, Redbridge Council and Redbridge Vision Culture and Leisure. We were contracted to provide three colourful character costumes, including the “monkey” design that would be suitable for a family and literacy event on Saturday, 10th July.

Over nineteen years we have positively collaborated with local residents and public bodies to deliver colourful and celebratory characters and in this case, we undoubtedly got it wrong. Our lack of judgement in the choice of costume is one we deeply regret, having profoundly undermined our relationship with partners and the public. We apologise profusely to everyone concerned and are horrified at the repercussions it has had on partners.

In the future, we will hold ourselves to a higher standard when determining the suitability of a costume. Although the monkey was well-received at carnival events with a mixed audience, it was entirely unsuitable for a children’s event and should never have been used. The monkey costume has also been retired.

We deeply regret the distress caused to any residents and library staff members, but also the wave of online abuse and sexual misconduct allegations being made against our performers. We apologise on their behalf and ask that people address their concerns to us, not individual performers or library staff who have done nothing wrong.

We are a local community-based arts organisation with ambitions to bring communities together, not sow division. As we review our processes as suggested above, we will endeavour to continue that mission and ensure such a poor error of judgement cannot happen again.
We apologise profusely and will work to rebuild the relationship and trust we have developed over the past two decades.

To my surprise I found the original reachable on Youtube, downloaded it and saved it (got it in the full HD, too) because you know how disappearing acts go. I had read that it had been set private, but there it was at the original location, with this comment in the description:

Some edit-related observations....

When they cut over to having all the older men singing, it turns the tone and perspective deeply dark, deeply pedo.

And before that it was horribly 'wrong'. When it goes "Just this once, you're correct" and the guy sneers and stares into the camera... wow did they not even check what that really looks like, how threatening it looks, how psycho.

They would sing phrases with bad implications, and then pop a little vocal in with an alternate, less-sexualized meaning, like "You won't approve of where they go at night" ... (to protest)

Whoever produced and released this at SF GMC is a true, TRUE, tard, and the performers should have known better than to participate. Definitely not obvious humor, bro... definitely not.

Really too bad, vocals-wise they were a nice-sounding group. Oh well.

This um performance deserves its own thread heh.
