Wichita police have released the names of a mother and her child who were found shot to death in a south Wichita home Monday.

The victims are Mickayla Sorell, 24, and 8-year-old Natalia Sorell Lopez. Police think they may be the victims of domestic violence and are looking for Sorell’s boyfriend.

Police believe the mother and daughter were killed Saturday evening, but they were not found until Mickayla Sorell did not show up for work Monday and someone asked police to check on her.

Their bodies were found around 4:30 p. m. Monday.

Police are asking for help to find Sorell’s boyfriend, Daniel O. Lopez, 25, who they named as a person of interest. They want to question him in the case. Police say he should be considered armed and dangerous.

A 29-year-old Wichita man who killed his girlfriend and their 8-year-old daughter more than four years ago has been sentenced to the "Hard 50" plus 15 years.
According to the Sedgwick County district attorney's office, Judge Eric Williams sentenced Daniel Lopez to life with parole eligibility after 50 years for first-degree murder and 184 months for second-degree murder. The sentences will run consecutively, meaning if Lopez is paroled after 50 years, he will begin serving the 184 month sentence. He pleaded guilty to the charges in June.

If Lopez ever gets out of prison, he is is subject to lifetime post release supervision. The judge also ordered $5,000 in restitution for funeral expenses to the family of Lopez’s two victims.

The Kansas Supreme Court on Friday upheld the sentence of a Wichita man who fatally shot his girlfriend and daughter.

At his sentencing, Lopez had asked for either a departure from the mandatory “hard 50” sentence — a life sentence without the possibility of parole for 50 years — for his first-degree murder conviction. He also asked to serve concurrent instead of consecutive sentences in their deaths.
In his appeal, Lopez said several mitigating factors should have qualified him for a lower sentence, including his remorse and acceptance of responsibility, the nonviolent nature of his prior offenses, mental disorders and impaired brain function, low risk for future violence, and rehabilitative efforts.

In reaffirming his sentence, the state’s high court unanimously determined that a reasonable person could determine that even after granting those mitigating factors, Lopez’s crime warranted the mandatory sentence.
