Video: Children Narrowly Missed In Bronx Sidewalk Shooting

Shocking video released by the NYPD Friday shows the moment two young children were nearly caught in the crossfire on a Bronx street when a gunman shot a man multiple times at close range.

Police said it happened around 6:45 p.m. Thursday on Sheridan Avenue, near East 172nd Street, in the Claremont section of the borough.

The unidentified shooter walked up and opened fire at the 24-year-old victim, striking him in the back and both legs, authorities said.

Video shows the children, a 5-year-old boy and 10-year-old girl, get caught up in the dangerous melee, despite not knowing the victim. According to police, they were just walking down the street when it all went down.

In the video you can see the girl pull the younger boy and cover him as bullets rang out around them.

Miraculously, neither of the children were wounded, officials said.

The suspect then hopped on the back of a scooter operated by another individual and both fled the scene, heading northbound on Sheridan Avenue, police said.

According to the NYPD, the victim was taken to an area hospital by private means. While his condition was not clear, police Friday morning said he was “stable.”

I'm also (perhaps unfairly) not thinking too highly of the "victim." He dived toward the children and then dived back at them again trying to get away from the gunman! I'm sure the vast majority of us can't say for sure what we do in that situation, but I feel like my instinct would tell me to get away from the innocent children. Idk.

Looks like he was paralyzed after the shot to the back so not sure if his move behind the kids was intentional or not but if he knew who was shooting expect a retaliation this weekend. Poor shot should have just finished the job instead of backpedaling and wildly shooting.

Police say a gunman is now in custody after shocking video showed him open fire on a Bronx sidewalk, catching two children in the crossfire. Michael Lopez, 27, faces several charges, including attempted murder and reckless endangerment, officials said.

Police sources told CBS New York that Lopez has known gang ties and five prior arrests.
