A naked maniac shoved a man off of a Harlem subway platform Saturday, but then also jumped down and zapped himself to death on the third rail during a crazed, on-the-tracks scuffle with a good Samaritan, police said.

The unhinged and unclothed man had been wandering through the 2 and 3 station at 110th Street and Central Park North when he pushed the man, a stranger, at around 3:40 p.m., police said.

A brave fellow straphanger jumped down to the track bed to help.

That’s when the nude attacker jumped onto the tracks himself — and began pummeling the would-be rescuer, police said.

During the struggle, the attacker made contact with the third rail. He was pronounced dead at the scene shortly afterward, police said.

A train was entering the station at the time, but did not make contact with the two surviving straphangers, police said.

The mother of Saturday’s deranged naked subway pusher says her son was not an aggressive person — just off his meds during the Manhattan horror.

Ethel Trammell told The Post on Sunday that her son, Malik Jackson — who was killed after jumping on the good Samaritan trying to help the man he shoved — would typically have been the one to play the hero, not the villain.

“I apologize for what he did to the people in the subway,” said Trammell, 53. “But that just wasn’t him.

“Believe me, if my son jumped on the track, he would have jumped on the track to try to help you. My son had a good heart.

“He definitely would’ve helped,” the mom said. “He wouldn’t be pushing nobody down there. He would’ve been the one that would’ve jumped down there himself.”

She said Jackson was hurt by the COVID-19 pandemic — which seemed to have wiped out the social services he’d been receiving.

“Since the COVID thing, it’s different,” she said. “He used to have a whole team that took care of him. But since COVID, nobody kept up with him. Nobody kept track.”

“Before you had the visiting nurse, programs and stuff like that. People with mental illness don’t think they have mental illness, so it’s hard.

Trammell said Jackson was diagnosed with psychosis when he was a teenager and started to hear voices, becoming paranoid that people around him were trying to dress the same as him.
“If he got off his medication, he just wasn’t stable, and the longer he was off, he would get aggressive.

“The guy on the subway, that definitely was not my son,” Trammell said. “This was one of the nicest guys in the world. He was so nice, he would give you the shirt off his back.

This is so so sad, he was clearly really mentally ill and was unable to have access to his meds/help. I obviously don’t justify what he did but I feel really sorry for him, and his mom. At least now I hope he has some peace and freedom from the prison of his own mind.

He chose to go off his meds.

Mom needs to accept that this IS who her son was. He WAS an aggressive, violent nutter. You can't separate the person from the behavior, the behavior defines them, no matter what....but especially when they make the decision to not take the meds they know keeps em in a better track.

ohhhh. This particular psychosis explains the naked.

He chose to go off his meds.
These can be different, some of them do not choose in the truest sense of the word. Mental illness is in some cases comparable to a one-handed person trying to play a piano. They cannot do it properly, effort notwithstanding. But unlike an obvious physical disability, both hands are inside their heads and cannot be seen.

So, it can be difficult for the intelligent (we being like concert pianists in comparison) to empathize with the kind of mental illness that makes some of them do the stupidity of intentionally stopping taking meds.

My compassion and forgiveness for the mentally ill stops when murdering the innocent is reasonable to them.

It sounds like he had people (nurses/social workers) making sure he had access to his meds and was taking them, we don’t know if he made a conscious choice to stop taking them or if he was unable to get them. Unfortunately mental illness is a chemical issue, and it’s very hard to treat, you can’t test your blood to say “oh I need x amount of lithium today” as one would with something like diabetes. (How many cases have we seen of people not being able to afford their insulin recently?!) There’s also a deep shameful stigma against mental illness because it usually does cause unfavorable behavior that alienated people, it’s much harder to have empathy for someone smearing shit on the walls or screaming obscenities at passers by. I don’t know how we all would act if our brains showed us the horrors his probably did, it’s easy to say “if I was mentally ill I would stay on my meds and blah blah blah” but until it happens to you you really have no idea.
