Police Say Child May Have Died Prior To Car Crash
Officers Investigating Timing Of Child's Death

NORTH LAS VEGAS, Nev. -- North Las Vegas police now think a 4-year-old boy who was thought to have died from a single-vehicle crash may have been dead prior to the crash.
Officers said the wreck happened just before 9 a.m. Tuesday near Losee Road and Beltway 215.

North Las Vegas police said the initial report stated a 21-year-old male Las Vegas resident was driving the vehicle on a dirt road and lost control, leading to the death of the boy. They said it appeared the driver may have been off-roading when he lost control.
The boy’s 3-year-old sister was also in the vehicle and was transported to University Medical Center where she was listed in good condition, North Las Vegas police said.

Detectives are now investigating the possibility that the 4-year-old boy was injured elsewhere prior to the crash. Police said the driver was not the father of the children, but he was their mother's boyfriend.
There was no indication of what they were doing driving in the middle of the desert, and police do not yet know what the vehicle crashed into.

The coroner ruled Quick had 35 injuries on his body, many that were caused prior to the accident.

When questioned by District Judge Douglas Herndon, Carter admitted he struck Quick with belts and his hands. In one incident, he pushed the boy off a ladder. He also admitted to abusing Tyler Quick, 4, and 3-year-old Trinity Quick.

Donna Carter, the defendant's mother, flew to Las Vegas from her home in Arkansas to hear her son enter his pleas. She said it is her "mother's hunch" that her son is innocent. She said Carter pleaded guilty in part to avoid having to look at autopsy photographs at a trial.

Lookin' at that picture kills you...look at the marks on his forearm- what are those? They look like burn marks, or maybe from twisting or excessive rubbing. They sure don't strike me as some sort of unusual and nearly matching birthmarks...

As a mother, I cannot understand how you can allow someone to beat on your child, expecially when they're so small. I get a little sick to my stomach thinking it happened to anyone's child, but my own? You better hide 'cause I don't think I can be the forgiving type should you ever lay hands on my offspring. Mom's who could clearly be aware of abuse need to do time too.

Poor little Trenton, poor little Trinity. Losing her brother is her permanent reality. Hope she gets a better life from here on out...

Amber Scott said Thursday that she made the "poorest decision ever" not leaving her boyfriend before he killed her 4-year-old son in 2007 and staged a car accident to cover up the death.

"I pay every day I wake up that my son's not there," a sobbing Scott told District Judge Douglas Herndon at her sentencing in the death of Trenton Quick.

Herndon sentenced Scott, 26, to three to 10 years in prison on one count of child abuse and neglect with substantial bodily harm under the terms of a March plea agreement she reached with prosecutors.

In what is called an Alford plea, Scott did not admit guilt but acknowledged that prosecutors could prove their case.Uh-huh, and yet you were negligent and you admit it. So why the Alford Plea?

Herndon told Scott that if he wasn't bound by the plea deal, he would have sentenced her to more prison time for failing to walk away from her "piece of (expletive) boyfriend," Trevor John Carter, and turning a blind eye to his prolonged child abuse against Trenton and her other children.

The boy's grandparents, Richard and Carol Quick, both testified emotionally that they blamed an indifferent Scott for allowing the fatal abuse to occur. . . . Not her parents, of course.

* There is mention of "an old friend" who tattled on Amber and her new boyfriend (?), who formed an intent to kidnap the children and flee to Texas (a haven if ever there was one -- NOT). This has to be the slander to which you are referring. And the slanderer would be the "old friend" and the object of slander would be -- which? -- Amber, the new boyfriend, or both? Who are you? The "new boyfriend"'s new girlfriend? The old friend who tattled? One of the jurors? The court reporter?
