So, she is going to get out of jail in August? Is that what the article says? If so that is fucked. I don't care if she is brainwashed or not, she starved her child to death.

she's not going to be free to walk the streets, she's being committed to psychiatric care which to me means she'll be in a mental ward. i could be wrong though.

I'm reading it that she has to submit to psychiatric care but will be free to walk the streets???

I don't disagree that she was brainwashed in the cult but I think the psychiatric care needs to be in a locked facility. Javon was her responsibility, he was dependent upon her!!

She agreed to plead guilty only after prosecutors said they would drop the charges if the child comes back to life, Silverman said.

Wow, there is no way that would have happened over here. Her confession would have been discounted as being made under duress of blackmail or something. Did they not have enough evidence to convict without her confession?

She definatly should not be free to roam while undergoing her psychiatric treatment. After all, her son is dead because she failed him so miserably. Some kind of custodial sentence is needed, even if it is a psychiatric hospital.

Poor little Javon, RIP sweetie. x

As part of her probation, Ramkissoon must submit to treatment, including sessions with an expert on cult behavior.

So, she is being released? What about a fucking mental health evaluation and sterilization? Cases like these just make me want to bang my head against a wall.:banghead:

Why am I not surprised someone/many were sleeping on the job?

What the hell proof do they need before going out on a call? Surely they don't require pictures and video. Most DSS calls come in as tips without proof. But you know what? I don't think any of that matters since one of the members was interviewed and gave accounts of what went on there and still no one fucking gave a shit!

Who is doing the hiring for these agencies? Jeebus! I hope to God the police bring charges on DSS for this.

Thats all she is getting? Five years probation for murdering her own child and not quickly either, but by slow starvation. How is that justice? Im out raged.

A former religious cult member pleaded guilty Monday to starving her 1-year-old son to death after making an unusual deal with prosecutors: If the child is resurrected, her plea will be withdrawn.

So is she just brainwashed or is she completely off her rocker AND brainwashed?

I think the woman definitely needs some psychiatric treatment in an in-patient, locked down facility. Lots of it.

Or better yet -- amend the plea deal to say that she'll be kept locked up UNTIL the child is resurrected. That way she can sit behind bars and devote all of her time to continuing to pray for that to happen.

All out of thanks. I must agree. I cannot imagine my church telling me to starve my kids because they won't say "amen" or even a table prayer.

Here's one way to upend the system:
The trial of two members of what authorities have described as a dangerous cult will likely be delayed because they still didn't have lawyers Monday, nearly a year after they were charged in the starvation death of a 1-year-old boy.

Baltimore prosecutors have filed a motion asking a judge either to appoint attorneys for Queen Antoinette, 41, and Trevia Williams, 21, or to find that they have waived their right to counsel, either knowingly or through inaction. Their trial was set to begin Tuesday.
[...]

Antoinette told Baltimore Circuit Judge Timothy J. Doory that she had spoken to a lawyer after her arrest but refused to provide the attorney's name. Williams, after initially refusing to answer Doory's questions, said she had also spoken to a lawyer and would prefer to retain private counsel.

Doory cautioned it would be in their best interests to hire lawyers.

"You have this right," he said. "That does not mean a lawyer is magically going to appear for you."

Both women assured the judge they would hire lawyers before their new trial date. But that hasn't happened. No attorneys have entered appearances on behalf of Antoinette or Williams or visited them in jail, prosecutors said in their motion.

If a judge appoints attorneys for the two women, their trial would be postponed to give those lawyers time to prepare. But even if the court rules that the defendants have waived their right to counsel, a postponement is likely because the attorney for co-defendant Marcus A. Cobbs has a scheduling conflict.

This sickens and saddens me that the death of Javon Thompson could have been prevented.

Who on here didn't know DCS blew it again, claiming no calls, couldn't do a thing, wrong address all DCS self preservation BULLSHIT As always, a loser department with asshole administration causes the death of a child with no repercussion, Administrators found not guilty of stupidity and uselessness again

This is just disgusting. The callous cruelty they inflicted on this baby is unforgiveable. I hope they all rot in hell.
If that was my baby, I would have kicked that cult leader bitch in the cunt on my way out the door, with my baby in tow.
And frankly, I don't give a hoot whether they have lawyers. They have no remorse. The mother still thinks her baby is going to resurrect.

How long did they let that baby suffer? How long would it take for him to starve to death? GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

Two members of a religious cult charged with starving a 1-year-old boy to death in a rowhouse near Druid Hill Park told a judge that they wish to represent themselves at trial.

Queen Antoinette, the 41-year-old leader of 1 Mind Ministries, and Trevia Williams, a 21-year-old member, may still hire a private attorney or apply for a public defender to represent them in Baltimore City Circuit Court. However, the highly anticipated trial in the death of Javon Thompson, who allegedly was denied food in December 2006 after he refused to say “amenâ€￾ at mealtimes, will not be postponed again for that reason.

“They’ve now waived their right to counsel,â€￾ said Julie A. Drake, chief of felony family violence division in the Baltimore City State’s Attorney’s Office. “That issue is done.â€￾
[...]

after Williams indicated she would defend herself and Howard answered Antoinette’s questions about when the trial might eventually happen, the Queen, whose given name is either Toni Ellsberry or Toni Sloan, changed course.

“OK, I’m going to represent myself,â€￾ she said.

After a quick consultation with a public defender and a series of questions from the judge to determine their mental state, both women officially waived their right to an attorney and were escorted out of the courtroom. A different judge is scheduled to set a new trial date this morning.

Co-defendant Marcus Cobbs, whose absent lawyer was the reason for the postponement, smiled more than once during Tuesday’s proceedings despite the grave charge — first-degree child abuse resulting in death — he faces. Steven L. Bynum, who appeared Tuesday in a suit and with his attorney, is the only defendant out on bail.

A woman who pleaded guilty to starving her toddler son to death while part of a religious cult will be released from the Baltimore jail within a matter of weeks or even days, her attorney said Tuesday.

Ria Ramkissoon, 22, will be enrolled in a counseling program on a farm in rural northeast Maryland, according to attorneys on both sides. The program, which has no fences or guards, was chosen for her by a city prosecutor who arranges alternative sentencing options.

"It's not a correctional facility. It's a place for her to get re-acclimated. She'll be part of a community and have a job and responsibilities," said Steven D. Silverman, Ramkissoon's attorney. "She's very excited about the opportunity to do something positive."

Ramkissoon pleaded guilty in March to child abuse resulting in death.
[...]

Ramkissoon was scheduled to be sentenced Tuesday, but the sentencing was delayed until November because the other four cult members have yet to go on trial. She agreed to testify against them as part of her plea deal.

The agreement calls for Ramkissoon to receive a 20-year suspended sentence and five years of probation. The maximum sentence for child abuse resulting in death is 30 years, and defendants typically receive between 12 and 20 years, according to Maryland sentencing guidelines.

But prosecutors have shown little zeal in pursuing punishment for Ramkissoon, a native of Trinidad with no previous criminal history. Her mother has said she was naive and easily influenced when she was recruited into the cult as an unwed teenage mother.

Ramkissoon has received no mental health counseling while in the city jail, and the program will allow her to get the help she needs, Silverman said. She will remain there as long as counselors deem it necessary, he said.

The other four cult members Queen Antoinette, 41; Trevia Williams, 21; Marcus A. Cobbs, 22; and Steven L. Bynum, 43, are scheduled for trial in October on charges including first-degree murder. Antoinette and Williams have not retained lawyers and plan to represent themselves.

Alright, now this is ridiculous. Just hang the fuckers already.
Mother gets to go to a farm to get reacclimated, baby gets dead, and her asshole accomplices get to play the justice system until they eventually play the "speedy trial, you're doing it wrong" card, and walk away scot free.
I was born in the wrong era, cause I'm all for just shooting these fuckers where they stand.

A member of a defunct religious cult has withdrawn his guilty plea to a reduced charge related to the starvation death of a toddler.

Marcus Cobbs had agreed to plead guilty to accessory after the fact. But his attorney abruptly withdrew the plea Friday morning after a dispute with prosecutors over the conditions of his release.

Cobbs now faces trial along with three other members of the cult on murder and child abuse charges in the death of 1-year-old Javon Thompson.

According to a statement of facts that was read in court to support Cobbs' guilty plea, he helped the cult members cover up Javon's death by destroying evidence and stuffing the toddler's body in a suitcase.

Cobbs would have received a five-year suspended sentence under the plea deal.

It is about fucking time. I thought this woman was going to be tried as a criminal, not a victim, when she made the "resurrection clause" argument. I guess all I can do now is hope like hell she gets deprogrammed and the guilt of what SHE did drives her to seek death.

It just kills me when ppl do evil shit in the name of God.

I thought the bible said the same thing no matter who read it and I don't recall ever hearing or seeing anything about starving little children when they hadn't learned yet to say Amen.

3 Found Guilty Of Baby's Starvation DeathBALTIMORE --
A jury has found three people guilty of starving a 1-year-old boy to death because he didn't say "amen" during a mealtime prayer.

Queen Antoinette, her daughter Trevia Williams and Marcus A. Cobbs were part of a household that authorities have described as a religious cult.

They were each found guilty of second-degree murder and child abuse resulting in death. Cobbs was also convicted of accessory after the fact.

The judge in the case ordered medical evaluations for the three defendants. The trio could face up to 60 years in prison when they're sentenced on May 18.

According to prosecutors, Antoinette ordered that 1-year-old Javon Thompson be denied food and water, and her followers -- including Javon's mother -- all fell in line, believing they would go to hell if they disobeyed her.

"Queen Antoinette told them that God spoke directly to her. That's how she got the name Queen Antoinette," Assistant State's Attorney Julie Drake said during the trial.

If the consequence of feeding the boy was "that you're going to go to hell for all eternity, then that's a powerful motivator," Drake said.

"I wish I could just hold Javon and hug him," said the victim's grandmother, Seeta Khadan-Newton, after the trial. "This is the justice that we wanted, and we got it."

Prosecutors had been seeking a first-degree murder conviction for Antoinette, also known as Toni Sloan, but Baltimore Circuit Judge Timothy J. Doory threw out that charge Monday.

"The way that Queen Antoinette tried to portray herself as the victim in this case -- I think it's real important that everyone be clear about the fact that the victim in this case was Javon Thompson and his grandmother," Drake said.

The three defendants represented themselves. In her closing argument, Antoinette said she did not give orders to Javon's mother or anyone else in her household, instead offering "suggestions" and leading "by example." Prosecutors disagreed.

"She said, 'He didn't say "amen." Don't feed him.' That's an order," Drake said.

Three former members of Antoinette's household testified against the defendants, including Javon's mother, Ria Ramkissoon, who said she still believes her son will be resurrected.

According to testimony, Antoinette asked her followers to pray for Javon to rise from the dead and ordered Ramkissoon to "nurture him back to life." The boy died in either December 2006 or January 2007, making him either 15 or 16 months old.

Ramkissoon said she spent weeks with the boy's body before the group placed it in a suitcase and moved from Baltimore to Philadelphia, where the suitcase was hidden in a shed for more than a year, according to testimony.

Ramkissoon pleaded guilty to child abuse resulting in death and is expected to be released from jail after the trial concludes. She will then have to undergo intensive inpatient therapy.

"Think about what she's going to have to go through once she realizes that, at least in this lifetime, her child is not coming back," Drake said. "She's going to have to deal with the guilt. … I think she's going to be in for a difficult time. This isn't going to heal quickly."

"It's going to take years for Ria to get back to the child I know," Khadan-Newton said.

None of the defendants testified or called witnesses. Antoinette introduced a single piece of evidence: a handwritten application for nonprofit status for her organization, 1 Mind Ministries.

Quoting from that document, Drake said Antoinette described herself "as a chosen daughter of the most high God and a queen of Jesus Christ."

Ria Ramkissoon and son, Javon Thompson More

In their closing arguments, both Antoinette and Cobbs accused prosecutors of conspiring with the news media to condemn them.

"We've been like pariahs," Antoinette said. "These people want to blame someone for this child's death, so they've chosen us."

She also denied that her household was a cult.

Cobbs pointed to what he called "inconsistent" and "contradictory" testimony, including a medical examiner's finding that the cause of death was "homicide by unspecified means."

"There's not enough evidence," Cobbs said, "to say we intentionally, deliberately acted in a manner that caused this child's death."

Williams also said "the physical evidence contradicts the testimony," although she offered few specifics. She also questioned statements by witnesses that everyone in the household stood idly by as Javon starved to death over the course of a week.

"I can't see how anyone in their right mind would witness something as cruel as what she's saying and do nothing about it," Williams said.

Drake, the prosecutor, said the group members failed to intervene because of their belief system. But that doesn't mean they're innocent, she said.

"Even if they all believed that Queen Antoinette spoke directly to God, ... that does not constitute a defense," Drake said. "A religious belief is not a defense to a crime."

Jurors also convicted Queen Antoinette, her daughter Trevia Williams and Marcus A. Cobbs of child abuse resulting in death. Cobbs was also found guilty of accessory after the fact for helping to cover up the death of Javon Thompson.

The defendants each face up to 60 years in prison when they are sentenced May 18.

They showed no emotion as the verdict was read, a contrast to their laughter and astonishment during prosecutors' closing arguments. The trial lasted six days, and jurors deliberated for about three hours.
Witnesses said Antoinette claimed to speak to God and ran a tightly controlled household. Among the rules were that the group dressed in only white, blue and khaki and they left the house only in pairs. They destroyed identification documents.....

This case is utterly heart breaking. To starve a child is beyond heinous, falls in a special category of evil. Javon wouldn't have died quickly, he would have suffered, cried in anguish and might have voiced the only word he did know...."mama". How a mother can watch her child die by her own inactions is beyond me, simply beyond anything I could ever reason with. Her death began the day she allowed her child to die slowly, the day she stopped protecting and honoring baby Javon.

Baby Javon, you were the light of life, a gift one to be cherished, loved and protected. Not a soul championed your little life on your last days and for that they are damned. I believe as the angels laid their eyes on you they wept, wept as the grace of all that is good and true shown from your face. Kisses sweet one...kisses.

A woman who starved her 1-year-old son to death at the behest of a religious cult leader has been given a suspended sentence and probation.

Ria Ramkissoon pleaded guilty to child abuse resulting in the death of her son, Javon Thompson. The plea agreement contained an extraordinary provision: If Javon is resurrected, the plea will be withdrawn.
[...]

Ramkissoon, who has been in jail since her 2008 arrest, was given five years probation on Wednesday and must complete the program at a residential treatment facility.

Assistant State's Attorney Julie Drake called the sentence compassionate but fair. She says the state sees Ramkissoon as a victim.
