A 5-year-old child is dead and two more are hospitalized after they were found stabbed in a burning Chicago home in an alleged act of violence by their own mother, according to reports.

First responders who arrived at the Logan Square townhouse that was engulfed in flames Friday morning discovered the kids with stab wounds, WLS reported.

The 5-year-old was pronounced dead at the hospital, while two more kids — ages 10 and 14 — were hospitalized.
Officials have not commented on the tragic circumstances, but sources told CBS Chicago a mother stabbed her kids and then tried to torch their home.

A member of the family called 911, sources said.

A Chicago mother who allegedly believed her three children were "possessed by the devil" tried murdering them — killing one, age 4, after plunging a knife into the boy's chest — before setting the family's house on fire, local officials say.
Wendy Tolbert, 45, is accused of fatally stabbing her 4-year-old son, Jordan Wallace, on Friday morning at their home in Chicago's Logan Square neighborhood, according to local NBC affiliate WMAQ.
Prosecutors revealed details about the morning attack in court Sunday as Tolbert appeared on murder, attempted murder, arson and other charges.
According to WMAQ, Tolbert allegedly targeted her 10-year-old son first while he was playing video games with the 4-year-old victim, stabbing him in the right arm, prosecutors said. She allegedly set her sights on the 4-year-old next and stabbed him more than three dozen times before going after her 13-year-old daughter as she tried to call police and escape, per prosecutors.
After allegedly attacking her three children, cops say Tolbert sparked a blaze and went outside. Police and firefighters reported finding the kids inside the residence after receiving reports about the fire and responding.

"I got this child yelling for help out the basement window," an officer could be heard saying in an emergency response call, according to ABC affiliate WLS. "We're trying to get her out of the window. I do see blood."

Goodness, I hope the 4 year old bled out quickly and became unconscious. I cannot imagine the terror of having your mother not just stab you, but light the house on fire with you still in it. You're wounded, in shock (possibly in more than one way), terrified and bleeding...then smell the smoke and/or feel that heat.

Either this whole "possession" thing is a lie or people just ignored an obvious decent. It is exceptionally rare for you to just wake up one day and get to the point of doing something like this all of a sudden.

Hope the surviving children heal - both physically and emotionally. And how brave was the 13 year old?! Calling for help and trying to escape? Wish them the best during this horrible time and the rest of their lives. What a shame the innocent are left to struggle and suffer so much from this.
