The Fall of Oakland

Mob lootings. Random shootings. Elderly people beaten in the street. The city has descended into lawlessness. Leighton Woodhouse reports.
Earlier, on Juneteenth, 14 people were shot and injured in a gunfight by Lake Merritt, Oakland’s equivalent of Central Park. One of the victims was walking toward a Korean restaurant when a man strode up and shot him in the hand and in each thigh for no apparent reason. As the victim lay bleeding on the sidewalk, another stranger stole his phone.
Over a six-day period in late June and early July, thirteen elderly Asians were robbed and attacked on the street outside their senior living facility just north of Lake Merritt. The president of the building’s resident council believes the real number was more than doublethat when accounting for victims who did not file a police report. Then, last week, a viral video showed a man who was recently released from prison brutally beating and robbing two Asian women, one of them elderly.
This sense of, we can do whatever, there really aren’t any consequences—almost like a video game, like Grand Theft Auto or something.”
While violent crime has fallen nationally, the picture in Oakland is still bleak. Oakland mayor Sheng Thao’s administration and California governor Gavin Newsom have touted a 33 percent drop in crime in the city, but Tim Gardner, co-founder of the data-driven news site Oakland Report, discovered this figure was based on misleading statistics the city has been promoting for years. While it’s true homicides and firearm assaults are down from last year, home invasions have doubled.
Even these more accurate figures may be deceptively bright, because a vast number of crimes go unreported. Last year, a local survey showed that 92 percent of Oakland businesses don’t bother reporting crimes, for a simple reason: it makes almost no difference.
But really, there are two big reasons for Oakland’s lawlessness: there just aren’t enough cops, and the ones who exist are trained to underpolice. And the mayor and the city council share the blame for both.

With a crime rate of 44 per one thousand residents, Fresno has one of the highest crime rates in America compared to all communities of all sizes - from the smallest towns to the very largest cities. One's chance of becoming a victim of either violent or property crime here is one in 23.

Things aren't getting any better in Oakland, most California cities are turning into cesspools, from Oakland, San Francisco, Los Angeles even Beverly Hills. But liberals still rule and love their liberal politicians. Newsom turned a huge positive cash flow into a negative in just a few years and now Commifornica faces deficits, where did all those extra billions go?
But remember crime is down in all blue liberal democrat run cities

The perfect storm times three’: Crime, political chaos divide Oakland

OAKLAND, Calif. — Just when things were looking especially dire for the leadership of this proud Bay Area city, they got worse. And worse.
First, angry voters pushed a recall of Mayor Sheng Thao. Then the FBI raided her home. In between, a hail of bullets cut through a joyous Juneteenth celebration in one of the city’s worst mass shootings in years, which wounded 15 and reinforced criticism that Thao and other elected officials had not done enough to keep residents safe.
In addition to the contentious recall against Thao, which is ramping up ahead of the November election, Oakland voters will decide whether to oust their county’s top prosecutor, District Attorney Pamela Price. The city has also faced a staggering budget deficit and an exodus of businesses, most notably — and painfully — its major pro sports teams.
