A manhunt for a Syracuse man suspected of killing his girlfriend and his 11-year-old son came to a close Tuesday morning after New York State Police found him 2 miles away from where the shooting occurred.

Police responded to a shooting in Syracuse Monday night and found a woman and a child dead, according to Kieran Coffey, a spokesperson for the Syracuse Police.

David Huff, 43, was deemed the suspect in the shooting that resulted in the death of his 32-year-old girlfriend and his 11-year-old son, Jeremiah Huff.

Jeremiah’s mother was the first to call 911 due to her son calling her shortly before he died, Onondaga County District Attorney William Fitzpatrick said.

Huff has been charged with first-degree murder, second-degree murder and fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon. He is being held at the Onondaga County Justice Center.

Jeremiah's mother, Samantha Gallup-Peltier, asked the community to think of him through tears.

"He loved every animal and he loved being outside and he loved his father," Gallup-Peltier said. "And he's not here. Please don't forget him. Please don't stop saying his name. Jeremiah. Jeremiah Huff."

Jeremiah's maternal grandfather held a photo of him in the courtroom.

In David Huff’s life, three people gave him grace after a life of choosing drugs over everything else.

On a night last March, he killed two of them and tried to kill a third, prosecutor Rob Moran said Friday.

Huff, 44, fatally shot his girlfriend, Yeraldith Tschudy, 32, and his son, Jeremiah Huff, 11, with a shotgun inside Huff’s stepfather’s home on March 17, 2025. He fired a shot at his stepfather, but the gun malfunctioned.
On Friday, he was sentenced to 40 years to life in prison after pleading guilty to two counts of second-degree murder.

“Your actions are reprehensible, and you deserve to be incarcerated for the rest of your life,” Judge Ted Limpert said Friday. “Even a sentence of life is not long enough for you.”
Jeremiah Huff’s mother, Samantha Gallup Peltier, said she had just one thing to say to Huff as she ended her tearful statement.

“You are destined for the seventh circle of hell,” she said.
As Huff was led out of the courtroom to begin his sentence, he was hit with a barrage of expletives.

He remained silent.
