Prosecutors charged Carl Swanson, 41, with First Degree Endangering the Welfare of a Child, Serious Physical Injury.

A boy died on July 10, 2024.

According to court documents, the child died from injuries sustained on October 16, 2022, when he was two years old.
On that day, the child was airlifted to a St. Louis hospital after being found floating in a swimming pool.

On September 15, 2025, someone reported that a woman told her she had sexual intercourse with the child’s father before the boy was found, leaving him unsupervised for about 30 minutes.

The woman also said that Swanson told her to lie about what they had been doing.

When interviewed in 2022, the statement says Swanson told investigators he was in his bedroom and thought the two-year-old boy was in the care of his nine-year-old and 12-year-old siblings. Swanson claimed after inquiring about the whereabouts of the two-year-old, a search found him floating unresponsive in a three-foot-deep backyard pool. The two-year-old was airlifted to St. Louis Children Hospital for treatment, where he later died of complications from the drowning on July 10, 2024.
The statement says on Sept. 15, 2025, new information was received which reopened the case. A witness contacted law enforcement reporting they’d had a conversation with a female subject who said she’d had sex with Swanson the day the child fell in the pool and felt responsible for the death. When interviewed at the sheriff’s department, the female subject said it was true she’d had sex with Swanson that day, and the two-year-old was left unattended for approximately 30 minutes while the sexual activity took place and Swanson afterwards played video games.
The statement quotes the female subject as saying Swanson admitted to her he should have been watching the two-year-old and said to tell anyone asking what happened to say Swanson had either just gotten home from work or was just leaving for work.
The statement concludes by noting Swanson should be considered a danger to the community because an order of protection accuses him of sexually abusing a victim as young as 13 years old.
