The Wild Tchoupitalas are my favorite Mardi Gas Indians. Big Chief Tootie passed away and there's a clip, somewhere on damn YouTube, one of the last videos of him, practicing his clan's calls and responses. The REAL Mardi Gras. That and the Mamou Mardi Gras! Some of my coonass relatives ride in it every year. By the time they get to the 5th or 6th house, they're so drunk they fall off their horses.
Each costume (fightin' feathers) takes an entire year to make; each man makes his own, feather by feather, bead by bead. One costume can cost $1000 or more, and a new one is made each year, the old one passed down to a young Indian just getting started. The calls and chants are unique to each clan. I love our Indians, they rescued, protected and sheltered runaway slaves and broke-ass coonasses. Eventually intermarried, had children...and HERE I AM!
