New developments in the case of Tamya Grant, a seven year-old Saint Stephen girl murdered in her home. The State Law Enforcemetn Division arrested the girl's mother because she left her child home alone, the night of the murder.

Shaveta McGill is charged with unlawful conduct towards a child. Officials say nobody has been arrested on murder charges, but McGill remains a suspect. It's the latest development for town residents after seven months of waiting.

Wayne Hughes said from behind the counter of a furniture store, "I've heard comments about it ever since it happened, ever since we opened this store." Inside Homer's furniture store, talk Tamya Grant's murder will likely increase. Authorities arrested her mother for unlawful conduct towards a child.

In bond court, Shaveta McGill stood quietly as attorneys argued whether she should have contact with other children. The judge asked her about her current living situation and she said, "It would be me and my friend michelle." McGill's attorney, Eduardo Curry added, "She and her friend, Michelle. Michelle has three children."

Curry told the judge his client did not pose a danger to children. Solicitor Scarlett Wilson disagreed and said, "For Mr. Curry to say there's no evidence, of any harm or violence by this defendant is not accurate. Just because there haven't been charges brought, doesn't mean there's not some evidence."

Officials charged McGill because she left her her child home alone. News 2's Jenny Fisher stood in front of McGill's former home on Welch Street in Saint Stephen. Jenny said, "McGill told police that her daughter Tamya was in bed asleep when she left this house around 10:30 at night. She says she went to buy cigarettes and then went to the house of two male friends. When they brought her back to her home around one in the morning, she says she walked in and found her daughter dying."

Police found Tamya in her mother's bedroom, on the floor near the bed with massive head trauma.

Jenny asked Hughes about that home and the murder that took place inside. Jenny asked, "That house is right behind this furniture store. Do you think about what happened when you go to work?" Hughes said, "I drive around and every time I circle the building, I stop before going around. I look at the house and just imagine what that child went through."

The Saint Stephen residents we talked with say they're waiting for authorities to find the girl's murderer. They wonder what happened, especially since police say nobody forced their way inside. Officials found the doors to the home unlocked.

The judge set McGill's bond at $40,000 with the condition that she undergo drug testing from time to time and she cannot have contact with children under the age of 16.

That story seems fishy....I don't buy it. She left the house UNLOCKED in the middle of the night. She was shit for a parent for leaving a child at night, but be real, even selfish assholes want to keep their stuff from getting stolen. It seems far more likely she knows exactly who killed the girl....

This story breaks my heart. I have a six-year-old daughter and I cannot imagine finding her dying from an illness, let alone from head injuries inflicted by someone else. How that poor child must have suffered. I would turn into a stark raving lunatic out for justice. It makes me cry, thinking about that little girl wondering where her momma is, why isn't she helping her, or worse, why is she hurting her. It seems awfully coincidental that momma steps out for a couple of hours and the child ends up dead. I'd bet dollars to donuts that the mom either did it and then set up her alibi or watched as someone else did it, perhaps her dick de jour.

You know that whatever happened, this little girl ran to the one person that was supposed to be there for her and SHE WASN'T. Terror added to terror.

I hope this mom thinks of that and has it multiplied in her head a thousand times over each day.

I think momma killed her and the whole "I was out, the door was unlocked" is BS! I'm not a big believer in coincidences when a child ends up dead, but thats just me.

You may have a point there MO4. She may have just have been tired of being a mom. Either way I think she's still a selfish bitch.

The only mention I can find about finding the murderer is they are still investigating and no one has been ruled out. Although, on a Topix board, there was a discussion board started with the title that the mother is not a suspect...when I click on the full story link to the Post and Courier it is a dead link so this is all that I can find on it.

Title is Judge: Shaveta McGill isn't a suspect in her child's beating death

These charges are related to her having left the child at home, unattended, for hours and not having secured the home while the child was left ...â€￾
Shaveta McGill isn't a suspect in her child's beating death, but she shouldn't have left her 7-year-old daughter alone in their house for several hours, 9th Circuit Solicitor Scarlett Wilson said today.

Shaveta McGill was sentenced Monday to five years in prison for her fateful September 2007 decision to leave her 7-year-old daughter alone for three hours inside her St. Stephen home.

The child, Ta'Mya Grant, was discovered beaten to death.

McGill pleaded guilty Monday to unlawful conduct toward a child, and Circuit Judge R. Markley Dennis gave her five years, half of the maximum sentence.

Ninth Circuit Deputy Solicitor Bryan Alfaro said McGill admitted she left Ta'Mya alone around 10 p.m. Sept. 28 in an unlocked home. She returned about 1 a.m., discovered her daughter's body and called 911.

"The investigation is still ongoing as to who actually killed the child," Alfaro said. "It's still considered an active investigation."
