Yeimi Lopez-Cardona, 19, is charged with child cruelty and assault for injuring her infant son so severely that he had to be put in a medically induced coma.
When sheriff's deputies arrived at the scene they found a 1-year boy with injuries to his face and body, said Capt. Jay Baker of the Cherokee Sheriff's Office.
Baker said in the statement that the child was unable to respond to any stimuli. The child was then transported to Scottish Rite Hospital in Atlanta, where "he was placed into a medically induced coma due to a brain injury," Baker said.
Investigators arrested Lopez-Cardona after concluding she had injured the child.
The infant is now in stable condition and is in the custody of the Department of Family and Children's Services.
