A Muncy Creek woman arrested earlier this year in connection with the death of her baby was back in court Friday.

Demsey Long, 20, faces an additional charge of involuntary manslaughter following a preliminary hearing before District Judge Jon Kemp.

Long’s three-month old daughter died April 19 at UPMC Muncy about an hour after being brought to the hospital with no pulse.

The baby was reportedly unresponsive after being found in Long’s home by her mother.

State police reported that Long had an assortment of drugs in her system that day.

Police later recovered several pieces of drug paraphernalia and trace amounts of illegal drugs in Long’s bedroom cabinet and jewelry box.

The cause of the baby’s death was undetermined.

Long was originally charged with just one felony count of endangering the welfare of a child.

According to the affidavit, Long had endangered the child by failing to supervise the baby due to being under the influence of methamphetamine, amphetamine and marijuana.

“I’d do anything! I mean, besides giving up meth and weed!” It’s so awful. I love little babies in those big blossom headbands. I wish people could do hardcore rehab while doling hard core jail time. Not suspended sentences, while candy assing some church run 12 step. Le sigh...

A million times I’ve needed you,
a million times I’ve cried.
If love alone could have saved you,
you never would have died.
In life I loved you deeply,
in death I love you still.
In my heart you hold a place
nobody can ever fill.
It broke me to lose you,
but you did not go alone.
My whole heart went with you
the day God took you home.
I love and miss you forever Luna Lee Jordyn,
You’ll always be the light on my darkest days.

A Lycoming County mother has been placed on seven years’ probation after pleading guilty to involuntary manslaughter in the death of her 3-month-old daughter.

Demsey Mae Long, 22, of the Muncy area, will be on electronic monitoring for the first year of her probation according to the sentence imposed Thursday by county Judge Nancy L. Butts.

A jail sentence was not sought because the cause of death could not be determined from an autopsy, First Assistant District Attorney Martin L. Wade said.
Drugs were more important to her than her baby, he said. Long admitted she had used methamphetamine for several days before the April 19, 2020, death of her daughter Luna.

Tests revealed the presence of amphetamine, methamphetamine and marijuana in Long’s blood, Butts revealed at an earlier court proceeding.
Long told the judge she has been clean for two years and she takes responsibility for her actions.

State police alleged Long’s continued use of illegal drugs during and after pregnancy were a contributing factor in her daughter’s death.

Long told investigators she fell asleep in her daughter’s room the night of April 18 but Luna awoke around 1 or 2 the following morning and did not want to go back to sleep.

She played with her daughter in the living room until 4 or 5 a.m. when she put her back to bed wrapped in a “swaddle and pink blanket that covered her face.”

Because she was out of oil she had borrowed space heaters but claimed she had them set low. She also placed a blanket to keep the heat from escaping under the door.
Long “crashed” in another room and, according to what she told police, when she awoke around 9:30 or 10 a.m. her daughter was unresponsive, her lips were blue and the blanket covered her completely.

The infant had no pulse when she arrived at the Muncy Valley Hospital (now UPMC Muncy) emergency room where she was pronounced dead at 12:49 p.m.

A doctor told investigators Luna’s temperature about a half hour earlier was 104.
